The Cry of the Wild is a 1972 feature-length film that was shot and produced by Bill Mason. This film is a personal account of his time that he spent shooting his first film, The Death of a Legend, and covers over the span of three years. It takes place all over Canada and the wilds of the Arctic. Mason originally set out to prove that the myth of the bloodthirsty wolf was indeed completely false. It was during this time that Bill Mason became totally enamored with the big northern timber wolves and the pure white Arctic wolves.

Mason was able to relocate three young wolves to his own property. It was here that he was able to capture moments on film that had never been seen before outside the wilderness of Canada. He filmed pack behavior and hierachy and private moments of mating and birth when a litter of pups was born. What he discovered is that the wolves are a closeknit family unit who do everything for the welfare of the pack. They were extremely affectionate and playful with each and all took part in the rearing of their young.

This beautiful film was originally just intended to be released on a small scale in his home country of Canada. However, it was picked by an American distributer and launched in over 500 theaters around the U.S. where it did extremely well. As you view the "Cry of the Wild", you will also come to know up close and personal the magic of this normally elusive and magestic animal known as the wolf. And you will understand why the wolf must always be allowed to live among us as it takes it's place in the order of nature.
