Ellesmere Island is one of the largest untouched wildernesses on the planet. It extends far above the Arctic Circle in the far north of Canada and is usually surrounded by pack ice. Here, the wolves have only three short months to raise their pups and prepare for the winter.

This fascinating story of White Wolf begins in early summer when the pups are just 5 weeks old. Photographer Jim Brandenburg and wolf biologist, David Mech begin their documentation of the artic wolf pack and their daily interactions. To succeed, their timing must be just right.

Because the artic wolves from Ellesmere have not experienced the persecution and killing by man, they are quite curious, trusting and tolerant of the two men who are filming them. This allows the men to capture wonderful moments of pack life and behavior. They are even able to move within feet of the wolves without any fear of an attack. The wolves seem to accept them as equals which is heartwarming to watch.

David Mech and Jim Brandenburg decide to stake out a 24 hour watch of the comings and goings of the pack. Intricate pack behavior with the adults and pups are recorded. Jim Brandenburg also has a dream of capturing a wolf hunt on some artic Musk oxen and the two men are able to follow the pack and film this up close. it is fascinating to watch the precise teamwork and then the pack order of the wolves when it comes to feeding on their kill.

Summer soon draws to a close and then begins 5 long months of darkness where the lives of the artic wolves once again become a mystery. When David Mech returns again in the early summer he discovers changes have taken place within the pack. A new litter of pups has been born and he is allowed to experience a wonderful surprise which he had never dreamed would be possible.

This video will allow you experience who the wolves really are. They are not the evil monsters that myths throughout time have always protrayed them to be. You will be touched to see that the wolves are actually wonderful and intelligent creatures that we as humans have the honor of sharing the earth with.

I have had the wonderful pleasure on meeting and spending an evening with two wolves who live with people in California, and of raising a wolf-dog pup from 5 weeks to adulthood. While these animals were clearly "people", they were not "civilised" - not selected for civilised behaviours as dogs have been through, mostly, ruthless sexual selection over many thousands of years. I had thought that Konrad Lorenz had given us the final word, but I was wrong - What I take from the opportunity to work with dogs and wolves is that the differences are essentially "racial"; that "dogs" are, more or less, wolves, but wolves selected for behavior that aligns well with human desires.

  8. I subscribe to Anonymous´ statement from August 06, 2012
!6 years I spent with a white "dog" that was rather wolf since it was untamed, being brought up in the open country side and it was more human than anyone I´ve ever known but, at the same time, absolutely wild (don´t mistake being "wild" for being "blood thirsty") ...

It's unfathomable how these creatures sustain themselves depending on instinct alone. Mother Nature is amazing! And all her creatures are beautiful (some more than others).

  15. Thank you for sharing these extraordinary glimpses into the natural world. I had to avert my eyes during some of the more graphic feeding scenes - I feel badly for the prey animal, yet find it far more acceptable than the violence humans inflict on each other and the planet. It is because of those of us who find balance in our relationships with each other and the natural world, that we have not collectively perished as a species. As yet, that is.

I have totally enjoyed this mesmerizing video. It put my own existence on this planet into perspective. Thank you for sharing this remarkable images.

  18. My name is Jimmie Cason and if you liked this you should try to find "the rise of black wolf" in Yellowstone Park. Also try to find "Wolves at our door" by Jim and Jamie Drucher. I may not have last name correct but the title is, I have it on video, they setup and lived with a pack for 6 years. Jim
filmed the wolves as if they were totally in nature without being"tamed" He wanted to film as if he was part of the pack so he could record their true behavior. Jamie did audio recording of all the pack vocal calls. They were not married at the start of the project. At the end the pack was transferred to the Nespert Indians and moved to their land to live out remainder of their lives, tear jerker all the way.
Also watch 2 movies Snow dogs and Eight below". It makes me want to puke about this wolf hunting several states are doing now. They are killing wolves because of some small groups whinning
about their livestock being killed. BS They could protect their herds with donkeys or Great Pyrennes dogs. But they have already started the "hunt ". Sorry for the venting but our goverment
is relenting to small group of humans at the expense of the wolves. Truly SAD.

  19. Exuberante Naturaleza Selvagem...Simplesmente Meraviglioso Wolf, and Hayabuza White Falcos.

This is excellent. Such beautiful creatures. The White Wolf is an endearment...a "God" of the Native Americans - foretold future. God truly provides such glorious animals among us. Thank you for this extraordinary 49 minutes!

Whats up with the captions? Terrible translations. Very distracting. Loved the video. A "must watch" for the folks who want to hunt these marvelous creatures to extinction in the lower 48. I fear that, when they are gone, the hunters will travel North and destroy the white wolves as well. Knowledge is power. Spread the word. These animals are worth saving.
