The design for the reverse of the 2012 Native American $1 coin has been selected, the United States Mint announced.

Its reverse design features a Native American and horse in profile with horses running in the background, representing the historical spread of the horse.

It reflects the theme “Trade Routes in the 17th Century,” which pays tribute to early Native American commerce that was conducted over trade routes that cut across the plains and swerved along rivers and was facilitated by the horse that made the long journeys possible.

The design includes the required inscriptions, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and $1.

Both the Commission of Fine Arts and the Citizens Coin Advisory Committee preferred this design over 12 others presented for consideration by the Mint.

The obverse features the depiction of Sacagawea and child that has been used for the Sacagawea dollar series from 2000 to 2008 and is now featured on the Native American dollar series, which debuted in 2009.

This is the fourth design in the Native American series.
