America has been forced once again to endure the will of the politicians forcing a death sentence on a beloved animal in our country. This time it was the iconic and beloved American horse. A bill was slipped through Congress and signed into law by President Obama while Americans slept on November 18th, 2011. It has made the opening of horse slaughter houses legal again in the U.S.

This was just another underhanded approach by Congress by attaching the horse slaughter bill to a spending bill that had absolutely nothing to do with horses. This same devious approach was taken earlier this year to delist the gray wolves from the Endangered Species Act and allow the western states to begin the slaughter of the wolves through state approved wolf hunts.

Americans don't eat horses and they don't want them inhumanely killed, shrink-wrapped and sent to Japan, France or Belgium for a high-priced steak. Horses are viewed as companion animals in the U.S. not as animals to be used for consumption. If there is a problem with too many horses it is the responsibility of the horse breeders to stop this. We cannot continue to breed endlessly and send the excess and unwanted horses to a horrible death only to end up as dinner on someone's plate overseas.

It's time to stop the killing of American horses for slaughter and the exportation of their meat overseas. In a very poor economy we do not need to take away money from the cash-strapped federal budget to open more horse slaughter plants. There are more crucial needs for the federal budget such as the creation of jobs. Congress and President Obama are not acting on the behalf of Americans. Over 70% of the population is totally against this and we must speak out against this travesty of our will by our Federal government.

Please take a minute to sign the petitions below and let Congress and President Obama know that we are not going to stand for this injustice. They were elected by us and they can be just as easily not re-elected. Stand up for our beautiful horses so that don't have to die a terrifying death only to be eaten.

SIGN PETITION 1( Not spend 5 million dollars, to fund USDA inspections of horse slaughter houses, in the USA. Americans don't eat horses.)

SIGN PETITION 2 (Overturn Obama's Legalization of Horse Slaughter for Human Consumption)

  3. KdPurdy says:

This is not acceptable. Horses are amazing creatures and one of man's best friends from the animal kingdom. They are not food for us.

No, no, NO. To pass this would be an act of infamy. The first step toward Soylent Green when people will be rounded up for slaughter? You would cost us the symbol of American freedom in wild horses running through our country AND you would cost us in billions spent on building Government subsidized slaughter houses to carry out this equine massacre of innocents.
Until the horses are almost immediately wiped out and then billions will be required to refit the slaughterhouses to kill other species. Have a little forethought; encourage Victory gardens in which people again grow their own food rather than turning the country into a desolate wasteland of inhumane, much-less-than-sapien, monsters.

Horses are companion animals. Even wild horses rarely conflict with human activity. To murder horses for consumption by people-animals in another country is a COMPLETE BETRAYAL of the relationship between man and horse. I completely oppose all horse slaughter and am pleased to sign this petition. Beth L. Wright, Ed. D.

This is so wrong on every level. This is the worst case of abuse! I would not let anyone slaughter my dog nor would I any horses on my farm if I had one. They are to be respected and left alone. This offends me greatly. My native American ancestors would roll over in their graves.

As soon as I read this it made me sick to my stomach! Horses were never here for the purpose of SLAUGHTER! I as a human being with a heart have no understanding of why a "human" would do such a cruel thing. And what is your accomplishment in the long run?

  18. Anonymous says:

If it were me or a horse, I wouldn't go hungry.. Sorry Mr. Ed, the law of survival trumps my compassion. Blame it on my "human"-ness I guess.
