Remember the Academy Award winning documentary, The Cove? Well, the cruelty is still going on. It’s well known that not all of the dolphins trapped in this horrific annual event are sold for their meat. Some are sold to dolphinariums for entertainment purposes. The practice is known as “Blood Dolphins” for the shocking color of red the water becomes during the slaughter. Yes, it is literally the dolphin’s blood you see.
Two sad and lonely dolphins — appropriately named Sad and Lonely — were sold to the Taiji Whale Museum located only a short distance from the infamous cove in which they were captured. Sad and Lonely are on display in the museum lobby in a tiny tank. It is believed to be the world’s smallest dolphin tank.
Ric O’Berry — a long time dolphin advocate — has made a video of the two dolphins living in misery at the Taiji Whale Museum. Look at the ridiculously tiny tank these spotted dolphins are forced to live in. They are totally enclosed with no fresh air, sunshine or sea water.
WSPA (The World Society for the Protection of Animals) believes any tank or enclosure is too small for dolphins to live in. If you go by U.S. standards of 24 feet by 24 feet by six feet deep, a dolphin would have to circle his enclosure 1,700 time per day to simulate the 40 miles per day he swims in the wild.
“No facility can adequately simulate the vast ocean or provide for a dolphin’s needs. No captive program — no matter how large, well regulated, well funded, or well intentioned — can make a case for meeting a dolphin’s complex behavioral needs and no standard set by a government can be called sufficient.”
What You Can Do:
The Taiji Whale Museum is a member of the Japanese Association of Zoos and Aquariums (JAZA), which is a member of the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums (WAZA.) The Switzerland based WAZA is responsible for ethical standards of its members. Please contact them to ask they let Sad and Lonely be moved to — at the very least — an outside enclosure with sea water. How can anyone enjoy seeing cruelty waged upon ourselves or other species? Watching the waters 'run red' makes me sick. And keeping animals for one's pleasure is disgusting. These are not insects or one celled amoebas, these are intelligent, feeling creatures.
