Almost a year to the date a very loved and well known polar bear named Knut passed away at the Berlin zoo. On March 19th, 2011, Knut unexpectedly died at the age of four. His death was caused by drowning after he collapsed into his enclosure's pool while suffering from encephalitis. Sadly this took place when the zoo was open and many people were there to see him.

The world took notice of Knut as a baby when his mother rejected him at birth. He was then raised by a zoo keeper, who actually stayed with him in his enclosure. After his best friend, the zookeeper, passed away unexpectedly, Knut fell into a depression. He was then put into an enclosure with his mother and 2 other female polar bears but never found acceptance from them. At the time of his death, Knut, was living a lonely life trying to stay away from the other polar bears who would pick on him. Then on March 19th, the sad and tragic life of Knut ended. He was a world famous polar bear, well- loved by many people but in real life he was a very lonely bear.

Now another polar bear star has been born in a zoo in Germany. Hopes are that this precious baby escapes the fate of Knut and lives as happy a life in the zoo as is possible. This little female polar bear cub is stealing hearts once again in Germany. Anori made her public debut at the Wuppertal Zoo. Born in January, the cub shares the same father as the famous Knut, who died in 2011. "This was Anori's first trip outdoors", according to zoo Director, Ulrich Schuerer. "So far it has been very relaxed today; she even had a drink from her mother. It's all gone really well."

Anori was one of two cubs born to mother Vilma, but the second bear died after only a week. Schuerer warns that threats to the species must not be forgotten. "I hope that the people who will see her will also remember that polar bears are an endangered species. If global warming continues, then there soon won't be any more polar bears because their environment will be destroyed." But for now, these lucky visitors can still enjoy Anori's cuddly cuteness.
