Speaking at the International Forum on Globalization, Q'Orianka challenges globalization as it is today...and celebrates the recent passage of the UN Declaration on the rights of indigenous people.

Q'orianka Waira Qoiana Kilcher (born February 11, 1990) is a U.S. actress, singer and activist. She is best known for her role as Pocahontas in the 2005 film The New World, directed by Terrence Malick. Her second memorable film role is Kaʻiulani in Princess Kaiulani.

Kilcher has made a commitment to human rights and environmental activism. She speaks on behalf of various causes to achieve what she regards as environmental justice and basic Human Rights. Traveling frequently to speak at youth events, colleges and universities, Kilcher has been a featured keynote speaker for organizations such as Amnesty International, the I.F.G. International Forum on Globalization,[8][clarification needed] Amazon Watch IFIP and The United Nations panel discussions entitled "Indigenous Peoples: Human Rights, Dignity and Development with Identity", in collaboration with the Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.

She also lends her celebrity, voice and energy as spokeswoman, collaborator and supporter to several international and national N.G.O.s and organizations such as Youth Ambassador Amnesty International (Global Youth Ambassador for woman's Rights) AIDESEP(Spokesperson and Voice) Interethnic Association for the Development of the Peruvian Rainforest Federations) The Community School for the Arts foundation (volunteer/spokesperson) and Thursdays Child (youth counselor) Turning The Tides ((volunteer/spokesperson) Save Americas Forests,IDEM (South Dakota Youth Project) and is a spokesperson for the American Literacy Campaign.

Working with the National Endowment For the Arts on their "The Big Read" Campaign, she will record a book review.[citation needed] Kilcher has read Howard Zinn's The People Speak staged readings. She joined the cast for the first People Speak Film Series.

Kilcher recently launched her own youth-driven human rights and environmental organization "On-Q Initiative", to connect young Hollywood with youth activist leaders and projects from around the world, in support of environmental sustainability, corporate accountability, and basic human rights. Through her production company, IQ-Films, Kilcher is also producing several cause-driven documentaries and youth-programming projects. In addition to public activism, Kilcher is a silent advocate for the environment, driving a Honda FCX Clarity, a hydrogen fuel cell zero-emissions vehicle.

On June 11, 2009 she visited Lima to support indigenous peoples' rights in the Amazon Bagua, Peru. In 2007, Kilcher won the Brower Youth Award, a premier environmental award, for her work in persuading Occidental Petroleum to withdraw from the Peruvian Amazon valley. She received the Young Hollywood Green Award.

On June 1, 2010, Kilcher and her mother were arrested after Kilcher chained herself to the gates in front of the White House in Washington, D.C. while her mother poured black paint on her to signify oil. Kilcher was protesting President Barack Obama's meeting with Peruvian President Alan García, accusing him of selling land in the Amazon rainforest to corporations while suppressing indigenous protests. She and her mother were charged with disorderly conduct. The charges were dropped on June 6, 2011 after they completed community service. (Source: Wikipedia)

Mankind's scourge is the neoliberal (NB: for US readers, the term liberalism is linked the vision that your republican party is defending, what you called neo-cons since the bush years, so its the opposite of the label "liberal" you give to your democrats that you amalgamate with pseudo-socialism) global approach of society and economy, that is also exported worldwide with use of force and war. It's the most achieved form of fascism. It wiped out any native populations didn't seem eager to embrace it, it still attacks tribes in Latin America and Oceania, and now that the system is starting to be full of cracks, it attacks the people that had already submitted to it officially willingly, but if you look for the details, once again mostly by force and extortion, like we see now in the EU with Greece, Spain, Eire etc..

While I agree with most of your sentiments, it's clear that Indigenous people haven't always lived in harmony with earth nor in a sustainable way. Just look at the Incas, Aztecs, Khmer, Christmas Islanders and so on. The same goes for human rights. Most of those civilisations I mentioned were tyrannical dictatorships and ruthlessly suppressed human rights.
However, many indigenous peoples are as you say, especially nomadic.
    Good luck

    Playing in the Major Leagues.

    George Town, Cayman Islands - 19 October 2009 -

Prime Minister Gordon Brown’s recent speech on climate change catastrophe in the UK applies to the entire world.

Climate change is the most serious peril that has faced humanity in its long history. However, we are faced with more than climate change, there is peak oil and an out of control population, as well as concerns for water and food security in the years to come.

As I said to a colleague earlier today “failing to plan is planning to fail”.

Humanity is today playing in the major leagues. We are in a sink or swim situation. If we can keep the planet habitable by mitigating and adapting to the changing climate, switching to alternative sources of energy such as solar, wind, geothermal, wave, ocean thermal and nuclear, sequester CO2 and provide the population with adequate supplies of water and food and bring the population under control, humanity may survive .

Warfare and conflict will also need to become a thing of the past as climate change and energy may well exacerbate conflict situations. With a 9.5 billion global population by 2050 ensuring that everyone has adequate food and water could be problematic.

There is however, no ‘Plan B’ if we fail to resolve all the problems facing us.

When playing in the major leagues there is no time out, there is no one that is going to offer help, let alone rescue us. Look around, the neighbourhood is somewhat sparsely populated and there are no other worlds on which humanity can survive. Even if there were other habitable worlds nearby they would in all probability belong to someone else.

There are, in all likelihood, other intelligent races out there somewhere, however in the major leagues one survives on ones own. As a young civilisation it is up to us to solve all our problems, to make peace among ourselves, to bring the population under control, to implement the Millennium Development Goals (MDG). We must solve our own problems. As a young race we are as children, and as such we may not be able to solve our own problems. But solve them we must.

If we are able to solve the situation facing us and make it to adulthood, in the galactic meaning of the world, we may then be introduced to the neighbours.

One of the most hopeful initiatives that has been started is the Eradicating Ecocide Initiative. Ecocide is the extensive damage to , destruction of or loss of ecosystems. It is happening on a mass scale, every day and it is getting worse. We can change this. Our aim is to stop the destruction of the Earth by making ecocide the 5th Crime Against Peace. Ecocide is a crime against nature, humanity and future generations. See http://www.thisisecocide.com/

An international law of Ecocide would make CEOs and our Heads of State legally responsible for protecting the Earth. People and planet will become the number one priority.

If we do not make it to adulthood we will be just another minor statistic, a failure, a insignificant footnote in the universal history book.

For all these reasons we have to come together in Copenhagen and produce a new global climate change deal to replace the ageing Kyoto treaty. Unless we can do so, we are ‘planning to fail‘. Editor

Respect to Q'Orianka Kilcher, she makes at least according to whether the trigger a little attention. The big problem still lies in the greed of modern man. Holds every culture destroyed out of greed, since it gives to the people.

Appriciated is the knowing shared from Q'Orianka Kilcher of a shift happening in human consciousness, remembering our relationship with mother earth and the wisdom of all the Earths Indigenous peoples - from the heart and aligning with the mind as to be wise in how we choose our movement as a humanity on this earth. A powerfull and truthfull voice, one of the best tunes Ive heard all day!

She is a beautiful soul with a wonderful cause - I would have thought she'd be a better speaker, considering she's an actress...but I think her message was put across, unfortunately these messages are often directed in a futile way - preaching to the choir. But who knows...maybe one or two new ears is all it will take. :)

I think that today, our education systems in the U.S. is greatly lacking in educating our young people in the true way to care for mother earth. We teach greed to our young here in their early years and continue it through school. We NEED to bring sustainability, fuel, oil and air quality to the classrooms and teach our children to care for what we have, not get what we want in an instant. We do not teach our young to be patient, wait for what is good, and how to care for what we have. We have raised a generation or two of throw away products and to get what they want even if they have to walk or run over someone else. When we start teaching our children control, peace, patience and respect for others, our planet and universe, we may be on track. Just saying.

That was then. This is now. The GOP cares no more for the indigenous peoples than they do the new immigrants or other people of color. They are also destroying the middle class with their pro business and anti union stance. Who are you? Do you not see this? And why?
