In another slap in the face to the Native American tribes of Wisconsin, DNR Secretary Cathy Stepp told the Wisconsin Chippewa that they can “harvest” half of the wolf quota, but they are not allowed to protect them. This is just begging for another lawsuit to be added to the one filed last week to stop the use of dog packs against wolves in Wisconsin.

“Last week, Zorn sent a letter to Stepp saying a commission task force that deals with hunting rights passed a motion opposing killing any wolves and laying claim to all the wolves in the ceded territory.

“The Tribes’ goal is for all suitable wolf habitat to be fully occupied, thus enabling wolves to perform their appropriate ecological and cultural function on the landscape,” Zorn wrote.

“The State does not have unfettered discretion to exercise its management prerogatives to the detriment of the Tribes’ treaty reserved rights,” he wrote. “It proceeds at its own risk if it moves forward with its current harvest scheme, which will drive down the population and diminish the Tribes’ right to the presence and function of ma’iingan on the landscape.”

Stepp replied that she understands a wolf hunt presents a difficult situation for tribal members, but she contended the treaties give the tribes harvest rights, not preservation rights. She said the DNR would follow the treaty and reserve 85 wolves for tribal hunting, but anything more would infringe on the state’s responsibility to manage the animals.”

So it is perfectly okay to kill these animals in every way imaginable, but it is absolutely wrong to try to protect them? What is wrong with this state, and it’s so-called “leaders?” I have a sneaking suspicion that last week’s lawsuit is just the beginning, and Rep. Scott Suder (R-ALEC), George Meyer, and the bear hounders have awoken a sleeping giant. This insanity is going to hurt their cause far more than it is going to help it.

The United States takes the terms of its treaties with the Native Americans VERY seriously ....the terms they choose NOT to ignore anyway. What crap...good luck wolves!

it is horrible - this necessity that certain people have ton control and to kill. I am from Europe and here the wolves are trying to come again (they had been decimated by humans) - but there are still some people that do not tolerate one single wolf in they area, they shoot them even if it is illegal. I hope and pray for the best for the wolves.

@ Domy: ceux que j'ai rencontré effectivement sont comme ça - ça me révolte

This is so wrong. People just aren't happy unless they are killing animals. Wolves are beautiful intellance beings and they have a right to live. NOT be killed for the fun of it and so someone can say they killed a wolf. To bad that the people that want to protect the wolves can't buy all the tickets for the hunt and then just not use them. That way no one would be out there hunting.

i believe that killing of wolves may need to be done but not with dogs running them down! If a wolf harvest is necessary, let us, the native american, harvest the wolf. I don't condone taking any wolf and it sickens me to think that once again the white fathers of Washington want to intervene!

The government is crazy, it is ok to kill an unborn baby and illegal to stop anyone from doing so. It is ok to kill most animals and illegal to stop anyone from doing so, and yet they say it is for our own good. What will happen next?

  9. Anonymous says:

A wolf hunt is not necessary. It is Obama's stupidity coming through or just lack of caring. And Dogs part of it,sick!!!!!Hey as far as an unborn baby that is wrong too. This government sucks and being an american sometimes well I think we are in thewrong direction. PRESERVE WOLVES!

  10. Unknown says:

We need to stop killing Wolves!!!!! Don't think the people killing the wolves know that dogs are descendants of wolves. If it weren't for wolves we wouldn't have dogs. So I beg and plead to u all PLEASE STOP KILLING WOLVES!!!!!! If u leave them alone they will leave u alone simple as that.

  11. SASS says:

please stop killing these beautiful beings... how absurd it is to do that!

The action of Cathy Stepp is, like all such actions, a self serving one. Either she believes her power will remain at the cost of wolves lives or she is insane.

Either way, it is crazy to that we stand by to let this woman and those who stand behind her get the final say. Because both actions are unjust.

I write from Sweden but am also an American. I will keep my hopes up for tribal success in all regards.

  16. THIS IS NOT OBAMA! This is Wisconsin State Republicans. Get it straight. I was there for the entire debate in committee. The Tea Party Republicans are sick people.

    BITCH !

  18. Often men that kill wolves are jealous of them. Wolves are gorgeous, independent beings who care for the others in their route.

  19. Cheri Pilant says:

This is insane. Wisconsin need to vote all the republicans out. Elect someone who is for animal rights and people rights. Wisconsin has been taken over by a bunch of animal haters and union busters. Vote them out.

  20. Cheri says:

It is not just the republicans ...at all the people doing this are all dems for sure, since we have the same name...take a larger look behind all this.It is shocking the closer and clearer one gets. I now cannot stand WI,it feels terrible.I spent thirty years helping to bring the wolves back forgetting the white man and his ways especially the uneducated males in WI/If one could see each person attacking a wolf ...shocking to you all it most likely is a union worker.

  23. PJ Reed says:

Don't kid ourselves when it comes to the complexity of this story as it evolves. My work with the Nez Perce nation in Idaho in the 1990s specific to wolf recovery did include the tribe's interest in reestablishing wolf kills in accordance with tradition, but it was always clear that compromise would likely lead to awkward mediation in this context, for indeed, it is tough to challenge non-native hunters, etc., who might want to take a wolf down as a matter of their own "cultural" relationship with this animal (as contrasted as it might be form the native perspective). We cannot take for granted that our own conflicts have anything to do with Wolf's own power and life force, so let's look at the big picture and take into consideration how to tone down this human conflict without further damaging the current state of affairs, as hunting and fishing rights stand today. It is a long road, as it has always been, and Wolf, Bear, and Otter will be there, no matter how unclear out own (human) path seems to be. Peace and power, brothers and sisters.

  24. Nanna says:

I am Cherokee. My people believe that you should not kill anything that you will not eat. Then you are to only take what you will use.We do not kill the wolf nor do we eat it.The wolf is very useful in teaching the people to love their family and that family is to be protected. The wolf is our family also.We protect it.There is no other reason for killing the wolf than greed of the white man.The wolf was here before man.The wolf shares it's homeland with us not the other way around. You can not take the wolves home away from it no matter hard you try.Stop killing the Wolf! You are only making it harder for other means of life to survive by doing so.

  25. Catherine Keohane-Johnson says:

Surely Obama being the president could do something if he really was interested in stepping in? He's stuck his nose into plenty of other things. I wish that this persecution of these beautiful, intelligent creatures would cease :(

  26. Anonymous says:

Nanna> I would have not said/wrote it better myself. Completely agree with every word. Martina

  27. Charles says:

I have no respect, and a lot of anger for those who willingly kill any kind of animal for pleasure. And having the legal and political power to do so, only magnifies these crimes of ignorance and inhumanity.

  28. Unknown says:

why is it us humans seem to have to abuse, torture, kill anything not meaner or fast enough to beat or out run us? .. Our we jealous.. can we not handle a creature that can survive without our help, does that make us feel inferiour? We need to let others live and we can do our own thing and co exist.. this world should be big enough for us all... just stop going back to your caveman times.
