Its a new life for Tod the fox who was discovered dying after a road accident but was nursed back to health by a real life animal man

When most people adopt an animal it is an abandoned cat, dog or even ferret but not Gary Zammit.

He nursed a young fox cub back to health - and even fed it using a baby's bottle - after he discovered the creature dying after being hit by a car.

In fact he gave it so much tender loving care, including washing its fur and trimming its nails, that Tod the fox now lives with Gary in his family home.

These extra-ordinary pictures show one of the usually illusive creatures affectionately interacting with wildlife expert Gary, 42.

Tod sleeps in a dog basket in Gary's kitchen, and acts like a puppy.

It has even befriended an 11-year-old vixen called Lady, who Gary has also cared for since 2006.

Bid hearted Gary, who recently hand reared a baby heron and taught it to fly, said Tod really enjoys walking on a lead around the countryside.

Loving affection: Garry Zammit with Tod the fox who he saved after being hit by a car

Gary, who runs the Gwel an Mor wildlife park in Portreath, Cornwall, said: "When I thought he was ready to go outside I gently put a harness on him.

"He always pulls on the lead but it's much like walking a badly trained dog which wants to go off for a run.

"One of the most important things was that my other pet fox Vixen would have some company for her twilight years.

The pair have a special relationship after Gary found Tod dying after a road accident

"But Tod is a typical annoying teenager who jumps all over her wanting to play."

Tod is the latest in a string of injured animals that Gary has nursed back to health, including minks, owls, and slow worms.

In June, Gary hit the headlines after hand-rearing a baby heron and then teaching it to fly - by running alongside it flapping his arms.

Reading this story from Portreath Cornwall. I have family that lived near that village and I been to that village. My mom have a pet fox when she was growing up near Zennor Cornwall way before World War II. Now she is 95 years old and lived in the States. WWII BRIDES. GO BACK TO CORNWALL TO SEE FAMILY. LOVE THIS STORY AND I LOVE FOXES.

  21. I immediately thought of the 'witch' who lives in the glen in my all-time fav movie The 9 Lives of Thomasina. She nursed the badger back to health same way. IMHO one of the best movies ever made.

In France, where I live, people like Gary are fined and ordered to return the rescued animal to the wild, unless they hold a State licence for looking after captive wildlife. Perhaps Gary holds such a licence; I remember the case of an Oregon family that was heavily fined for rescuing a black bear who had elected to stay with it.

  25. Thank you! Are you single!? Crystal

  39. Kayleen says:

This WOULD be an amazing story except that foxes already make great pets all around the world. They are very easy to domesticate and have a personality like a cat and dog mixed together. Very affectionate. So this is really nothing extraordinary. Really wonderful for the guy to put his time and energy into saving the animal himself tho.

  40. wolfgar says:

  44. What a good and kind man... So glad he is there to help those that need his help. Foxes are so incredible and it's such a shame they have been so persecuted for so long.

  45. Teotwawki says:

Is it possible that I am the only person who thinks this guy is an idiot? The fox walks like a poorly trained dog? That's because he is a wild animal. I thought the story was going to be about the fox staying with him because the fox wished to, not because some jerk keeps him from running back to the wild. Lame.

The only thing bad about doing what he has done is when the animal dies it will break your heart. I just last week lost a gray squirell that i had raised from a baby to 3.1/2 years old. She died and it broke my heart. But i would do it again
