There are about 135 species of owl across the world and 18 are found in North America. The owl is a silent flyer, extraordinary vision and the best hearing of any bird in the world.

Grandmother Owls can rotate their heads three- quarters of the way around rather quickly giving the illusion of a complete turn. All owls are predatory and some owls hunt during the day but most hunt at night. Some species, like the Screech Owl and the Great Horned Owl, live in one place year round; others, like the Saw-whet Owl and the Short-Eared Owl and the Burrowing Owl will travel long distances. It is illegal to capture or kill an owl in the United States. Contrary to superstition, owls pose no threat to humans, physically or spiritually.

The secretive habits of the owl, its quiet flight and various calls from whistles, screeches and hoots, have made them objects of fear and superstition. The Creator made no evil creatures. Individuals to whom the owl speaks are very fortunate because messages of the owl are deep, far reaching and complex.

The varied and remarkable abilities of Grandmother Owl to fly silently and to quietly move from place to place offer lessons of stealth and poise to our every day lives.

The wise appearance from their large eyes, stout bodies teaches those people who hear the call of the owl to find deeper reasoning in relationships and events.

The vision and hearing of Grandmother Owl is very powerful. Those with this medicine are can be gifted with the ability to see into the human psychic and become clairvoyant listeners. Owl often visits those who are teachers, therapists and counselors.

Because most owls are active between dusk and dawn, they are sometimes called 'Night Eagles, or messengers from the dark side. If Grandmother Owl comes and sits nearby, it may indicate a need to peer into the darkness and face our fears. Or, a great mystery that is unfolding will be revealed by looking deeper in to its meaning.

Grandmother Owl is often thought to come to those who need to let go of some part of their life that is no longer needed.

As a guide, the owl teaches us to see and hear past shadows, beyond fear and darkness, though to the other side that promises light, happiness and knowledge.

I have been visited by owls for almost a year now in all forms. I recognize their presence and heed their great wisdom. I am a meditation teacher and am ready to embrace my full powers. I let go of all that no longer is needed in my life and am thankful for this kind and wise messenger. I love grandmother owl. Thank you.

Well, maybe they didn't always bring ill luck and death and the symbology of the owl now means something else to a different culture in the midst of a society that can technologically prolong life.

To see owl is to be in front of wisdom, deep profound wisdom...

Owls always settle near where I live. They have for years. If I move and there are no owls, within a few weeks, owls have moved in. I love the owls!

  11. @imbulldozer:You might want to look at the different meanings of owl from tribe to tribe. FYI, Alaska natives are not tripped out in taboo over Owl. Think, read and learn before you type.

  12. Unknown says:

ImBulldozer, owl lore is varied from place to place. Do some research before massively condemning a different teaching.

For example - Aborigines believe bats represent the souls of men and Owls the souls of women. Owls are therefore sacred, because your sister is an Owl - and the Owl is your sister.

Afghanistan: the Owl gave Man flint and iron to make fire - in exchange, Man gave the Owl his feathers.

Celtic: the Owl was a sign of the underworld.

Greenland: the Inuit see the Owl as a source of guidance and help.

Japan: among the Ainu people the Eagle Owl is revered as a messenger of the gods or a divine ancestor.

Russia: hunters carry Owl claws so that, if they are killed, their souls can use them to climb up to Heaven.
Tartar shamen of Central Russia could assume Owl shapes.
Kalmucks hold the Owl to be sacred because one once saved the life of Genghis Khan.

Siberia: the Owl is a helpful spirit.

The night I was born in Italy an Owl hooted all night and my mother got scared. My Aunt told her to not listen to him and ignore it. I was worried it might be a bad omen at my birth. When I asked my Mother what does it mean, she said that it could be bad or good. Listening to the sharing of stories has taken some of my fear away. Someone told me it is a Shaman, a healer.

The day after my Brother passed away, I was sitting in the house with windows open. I hear 2 owls talking back and forth so I went outside to listen. It was like my Brother and I was carrying on a conversation. I would think of what I wanted to say and the owl would answer me back. I have always had owl around my home but never heard the 2 talking. As for back in the older days, My Mother would hear a screech owl and would say someone is dieing... And it was always true. She even knew when she was going to die. Im thankful mine are hoot owls and I listen to what they have to say. I even wrote a little story about the night the owl spoke to me and planned to read at my Brothers Memorial but I just couldnt do it.

  16. SamJo says:

Not really. Although, they are known as messengers, that doesnt mean they are bad luck and bring death. You may see it as that, but what is luck? And death comes to us all. We all die. You want luck? Try doing things that give you something in return instead of hoping and expecting things to go right. I' have to say I have the worst luck cuz things suck a lot in my life, but I also credit it for what it is. I'm not tryin ro troll, but have it all wrong. He is a creature of our creator and a true wisdom of spirit to us all. No creature wishes harm on life is a cycle. Love it and respect it. Dont hold any ill thoughts of any creature of this earth ...that could bring you "bad luck"

Before my grandfather died, there were 7 owls in our garden. On the day he died, the owls were not there any more.

My grandfather was old at a time and climbed the hills and walked 10 kilometers with me, just to take me to my dearest friend that I have lost in war.Grandfather was the messanger from my dreams with magic wooden stick that touched fish in the lake behind the hills and changed their colours.
My grandfather never spoke much and he was a man of faith, born as muslim, one day they stole his shoes in the mosque and he never returned there.

  18. Creator always brings balance...every creature has something to teach us of light and dark...this is not good or is balance. As some have made mention, different cultures bring different beliefs. Owl Brings me many lessons...which someone else may not understand. Thank you Owl, Creator and all of you.

Owls being a good omen is not something that has just occurred from new ager hippies. There are many First Nations groups in North America with ranging beliefs. I have met FN people that don't think of owls as a bad omen. The Inuit people are another indigenous people that appreciate the owl (Oopik). With much respect.

the owl is a beautiful creation, it hears and watches. Respect, do not fear. It's a reminder of what once was and if we can't or don't hear the creatures of the night, then it will be a sad state of affairs indeed.

As far back as I can remember as a child and now as an adult, every where I have lived, an owl or 2 have made their homes either in a tree in my own yard are very close to where I am or was living. I was told once that Owl's stay near me because of my gift of "sight." After reading this, I understand even more now. Thank you so very much for sharing this!

An honor to be in a world where owl IS. Athena's animal symbol: seeing with owl's eyes into the heart's of humans:what they need at their darkest hours, what they fear but must go through. The adviser to heroes, to those who want to complete their journey home.

Ancient Celtic shamaanism has never seen Owl as bringers of ill luck or harbingers of death, they have always seem Owl as a bringer of wisdom, of showing the way forward thru the dark and into the light, of being able to see beyond what is obvious to that which is hidden. Fear is what brings ill luck, face fear and see it for what it is, Owl is there to help us do that. x

  29. It is a Congress or Murder of Crows, a Conspiracy, an Unkindness, or a Constable of Ravens, and a Wisdom or Parliament of Owls.

Owls will attack Ravens and Crows during the night as they sleep; Ravens and Crows will drive Owls away from their territory during the day. However, both of these creatures are revered as Guardians of Souls as they pass from this world to the next. Ravens guide during the day while Owls guide during the night.

All creatures, even Humans, have something to teach all of us. Don't let just anyone lead you to your beliefs, look within and find the answer you already carry.

I was always taught that when a person was ready to die, the owl came to carry a good soul to Heaven. That would explain the owl's presence at the time of many deaths, but it is not the cause or omen of them.

tradition varies from tribe to tribe and across the world concerning this noble creature.I have studied the animal medicines for many years and just as a human has many facets to their personality so does the creatures that walk this earth with us,the owl is many things and does warn of death and deception as well as being a messenger from the other side.He also teaches of wisdom in thought and action.

I ae enjoyed reading all of these comments,i have woke up to a long sleep in my life. one I chose through drugs and alchohal.many times in my previous life creator would ask me if I ws ready to take responsibility n the answer was no for many years.i was not ready to be what creator would be.i felt I would fail.when I did get sober I was broken and scared but I reached out to the old ways.the things I left behind in child hood my granny tought me. birds started showing up and making there presence first it was hummingbirds in the dead of winter then crows would be everywhere.each with confirmation of the new path I was on. I asked elders,i read I stayed sober.2 years ago,in the first mnth of the new year, grandmother owl came and sat with me. in dense urban area not 5 feet from me and we sat wit me fr 15 minuts b 4 turning her head all the way n then her body and I watched her fly away.that was one o the best n most powerful moments of my life.if you have had a raptor bird choose your company at land at eye level or close to you te yu know how awesome that is...ty creator fr my life today and ty for your gifts AHO AMENE

I am blessed to have a Great Horned Owl, close by. This beautiful raptor has swooped close by on a couple of occasions, and the calls that I hear at night sometimes, is very comforting. Every event, in nature, that we witness, has meaning - if we can but quiet the mind long enough to perceive it.

Its true when you say owl picks you. You really dont have much a choice when it does so. You just gotta roll with creators plans. It is so that creator did not create evil... just sometimes he assigns missions for his creatures the 2 legged, the 4 legged the winged n such and we all have our own responsibilities. Not all missions are desired but have their place in the circle of things present and to come. All missions and tasks of creator are honourable ones. Just know how to tell the difference. Some times a lesson is discuised as bad luck also. Wish all of you the best, and better understanding on the way things work and are so in the world we live in.
