1 Million to Ban the Lion Trade - Petition

Africa's beautiful wild animals are under brutal and specie's threatening attacks by poachers who are backed by the Asian criminals. These animals are being killed and their body parts ground up into fake medicinal potions that are then sold to the Asian consumer. Much attention has been on the Rhino and Tiger in this regard. South African president, Zuma, has been accused of turning a blind eye to the plight of these animals.

Recently a global ban on tiger bone sales now has traders hunting a new prize -- the majestic lions of Africa. Lions were already being farmed under appalling conditions in South Africa for "canned hunting". This is where rich tourists pay thousands of dollars to shoot them through fences.

Now sadly the lion bones from these killing farms are being exported to phony 'medicine' makers in Asia for record profits. Sales are exploding and the fear is that as prices rise, the wild lions will come under poaching attack. Currently there are only 20,000 wild lions left in Africa.

In an attempt to stop this horrible trade, the organization, Avaaz, kicked off a hard-hitting ad campaign in Johannesburg Airport’s International Arrival Hall, in South African Airways’ inflight magazine, and on key tourism websites. This campaign calls on the South African government to ban the trade of lion bones to make fake ‘medicines’ sold in Asia.

The ads which are seen by passengers arriving into the biggest airport in the country, call attention to the lion bone trade and the detrimental reputational impact it may have on South Africa’s tourism industry. Since it is money that talks, the goal is that this will convince President Zuma that this brutal trade is hurting South Africa's image as a tourist destination. He has the power that could ban and punish the trade in lion bones. Please take a minute to sign the petition to show additional support for this endeavor.

While this comment is certainly true, having to appeal to a person's selfish interest, and not their morals and ethics, shows there is still a long way to go.

so very sad that we put profit above the life of such a magnificent creature. I hope that people will come to their senses. It is time for the chinese to let go of their antiquated beliefs and step into the present. We lose so many bears because of these rediculous beliefs, it needs to end.

  12. Anonymous says:

Please stop killing these godly creatures they are a beautiful part of your country and you are going to make them extinct which will eventually make us extinct. The chinese are going to reap what they sow coming very soon. They let companies come to china and polute the environment with no controls and they are going to suffer for it. The death of millions and no lion bones will be able to save any of them.

What is the matter with Chinese people that they believe animal parts are beneficial in medicine? This is so cruel and unnecessary.Anyone dealing in this trade should be severely punished. These animals are beautiful and the humane race should feel privileged that they share the earth with them.

wht can't humans just leave wild animals alone? its just not right to kll them!

  17. Anonymous says:

This trade does far more harm than good to the South African image. Far more people want to see these animals living naturally in the wild rather than either drugged or abused for the canned hunt groups or for some supposed Chinese health benefits.

  18. Anonymous says:

please stop this. they don't bother anybody.how would you like being an animal and they abused you or kiiled you it's just not right nothing but crazyness

some people are just crazy in there head they need help like a nut house

  20. Unknown says:

To kill these animals is wrong, and the biggest reason it,s done is for money,
money talks as they say and it is wrong to kill them; those who do this are not
in the right frame of mind, leave them alone, or they will become extinct.

  21. Paul F says:

Please, Mr. President, end this senseless killing.

  24. Anonymous says:

These practices are indeed cruel, evil and barbaric. The lives of these majestic giants is not worthless. They have as much right to a happy and healthy life as we do. I would never visit your country knowing about the crimes against many innocent animals there. It's shocking and disgusting. Please stop all this now.

  25. jany says:

Please, President Zuma, embrace your humanity and stop this barbaric practice. These beautiful animals are the brothers and sisters of humanity
