Office of the Minnesota Governor: STOP WOLF HUNTING & TRAPPING IN MN

ST. PAUL, Minn. (WCCO/AP) — The state’s first wolf hunt gets underway Saturday, and the protests are continuing to the very last day.

Wolves came off the state’s endangered list last January. The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources says the hunt is needed for the preservation of the wolf population, which it says can double in a year.

It set a quota of 400 wolves, which includes an “early hunting season” starting Saturday.

Protesters who are adamantly against the first wolf hunt gathered at Minnesota DNR Friday morning to voice their displeasure about the upcoming hunting season. About 50 to 75 people gathered outside DNR headquarters to make their voices heard.

“It’s very bad for our society when we have so many people who value wolves who’ve worked so hard to keep them from going extinct, to trap them brutally, kill them and to have fun doing it, doing it for sport,” said Maureen Hackett with Howling for Wolves.

The group Howling for Wolves chose the area near DNR headquarters to let the public know how the hunt will have harmful effects on the state’s wolf population. Some protesters held signs of bloodied wolves in traps, others wore masks and others are calling the hunt torture and a slaughter.

Hackett said the hunt isn’t only cruel, but it’s hurtful to Native American tribes who see the wolf as a sacred animal.

DNR officials said they are committed to the survival of wolves species and said the hunt will not affect their efforts at preservation. A lawsuit aiming to stop the wolf hunt is currently stuck in the Minnesota Court of Appeals and likely won’t be addressed until sometime next year.

Dan Stark a wolf specialist with the Department of Natural Resources, says he expects hunters will take about 70 wolves in the early season.

Wisconsin hunters and trappers have taken more than 40 wolves since their season opened Oct. 15.

Wolf hunting opponents lost when they went to court to try to block Minnesota’s season. Howling for Wolves plans to protest outside DNR headquarters in St. Paul Friday and at Lake Superior Plaza West in Duluth Saturday.

  4. PLEASE STOP :(

Try to put yourself in the wolves place. Your homeland being taken, your family being hunted, food becoming scares. Would you like to be trapped, or shot, I doubt you would. Show some compassion and stop acting like animals. Leave the wolves alone. If need be relocate them but stop this slaughter.

It is one thing to shoot an animal in the heart so it will not suffer. It is quite another thing when you painfully trap it so it suffers tremendously. Trapping should be outlawed. Humans make me sick!

They do not care if these wolves are not a threat. They signify freedom. And that illusion we live under in his hypocritical country makes me ill.

This is so wrong! Why does man think he has to kill all of God's creations? We fought so hard to bring this beautiful creature back from extinction only to have them slaughtered now?! This is so shameful.

I agree with what black wolf said. How would the hunters feel if the paw was on the other foot an they was hunted just for money . how would they feel if there family was hunted just for money. Animals are teachers on this earth why can't people take time an understand this .Hey hunters they have family too!!!!!! Wanishi (TY)

  21. Kirin Lee says:

This is so wrong. These animals were put here by the creator to live free, not be destroyed by human hatred and selfishness. We are all connected, what hurts one hurts all. Put a stop to this now! It's murder plain an simple.

  22. Sandra Ballantyne says:

The wolf should be considered sacred as it is to the American Indians, they deserve to roam on this earth as much as we do. Why cant humans have more respect for these beautiful creatures, for the people who hunt & trap & torture these animals need to be locked up & tortured themselves until they learn how to respect God's creatures.

ing just for a pelt...any pelt on any creature is wrong. Wolves are NEEDED. They are a vital part of the ecology of this land. As it has been proven time and time again. So don't let your greed or your lust for a pelt sway you into killing such a majestic animal. You can learn a lot from wolf behaviors and habits.

This is NOT sport,it is murder.ANY "sport" that involves the hunting and killing of animals should be banned for ever.NO-ONE who calls themselves a humane being has any right to take life for "fun".If you need to feed yourself or your family is the only reason to hunt, just like they do.Do not bring shame on yourselves and the human race by persisting in this sick practice.

  32. kadi spicer says:

No one has the right to go round murdering the beautiful, sacred Wolves (or any other animal) in the name of sport, or fun. Those that do it should be treated the same way, see how they like being chased, shot at, trapped etc. They would be petrified, may they one day know that fear, & as i've said before, i hope they enjoy being in hell.

First time in 64 years that I have been ashamed to live in Minnesota. I love the wolf, their howl, their beauty and it sickens me to see what Minnesota and other states have allowed to happen to this awesome creature of God. STOP THIS SPORT, IT ISN'T A HUNT...HUNT IS WHEN YOU ARE HUNTING FOR FOOD. This is no different than the big game hunters that go out for trophies and are killing of other species. Humans have become the lowest of all. TO THE WOLF: RUN FAST AND HIDE UNTIL THIS IS OVER AND BEWARE OF THE METAL ON THE GROUND.

  37. Dave Reed says:

To kill such a beautiful , intelligent and much needed creature is a sin !

  38. Catherine Keohane-Johnson says:

Disgusted at Minnesota being so stupid and ignorant regarding these magnificent animals. The killing of these animals must stop, but then if man is so set on war is there any hope at all for animals like wolves? Human beings are the stupidest and most ignorant animal on earth.

I'm from England and it breaks my heart to see what's happening. My one dream was to see wolves in the wild but I fear this may never happen. As a spiritualist I know that when the people responsible for killing these beautiful creatures have passed over they will have to face the wolves and see their pain and sadness. And people say that wolves are one of the most dangerous animals on the planet....yes they are if they are fighting for their lives, otherwise they stay away from humans for fear of being killed. I am ashamed to be a human being sometimes and I honestly think that hunters won't be happy until wolves are extinct. God Bless them all...Miss Rae Boxley, England

  40. Scott Richardson says:

Wolves should never be hunted. They are just another innocent being in a country that has taken and not given back. Perhaps we should have a hunt where the hunters become the hunted for their skins. The Native Americans were right, the white man has no clue how to respect the land or anything else. It is time we start respecting the wild and all of the gifts that we were given by the Creator. Let's start with these wolves!!!

Wolves, like every other wild animal left, are being made to suffer for the ignorance and convenience of mankind. Instead of using our intellect and resources to come up with win-win solutions to what a few perceive as a threat, killing by any means is just easier, isn't it? And it creates such fun opportunities for soul-less miscreants who consider causing death for other species a good time. Stop this hideous practice now...please.

  45. Unknown says:

Do they realize that by killing 400, they are in all likely hood actually killing 600 or more? Wolves mate for life. And there have been many times when a wolf mate dies, the other is so depressed and distraught, that it stops hunting. It wont eat, drink, and stays back from the pack, eventually succumbing to death from heartache. They will be back on the endangered list simply because of broken hearts.

  46. Anonymous says:

6% of the population has the control over the DNR and what they do? What about the rest of the country that opposes this hunt, torture. It is a heinous crime against the wolf and wildlife. I will never visit this state because this stupidity. This will cost the state of a lot of revenue that could help with other programs and it's population. GET THE POINT loss of MILLIONS of TOURIST REVENUE. I also won't buy anything made in this state. They need protection! The hunters are only doing it for Trophies not to provide for their families

  47. Anonymous says:

All this hunting of wild animals has to STOP! What did they ever do to YOU? Just because something happened in the past does NOT mean you need to continue all this nonsense! Wolves are more afraid of people than we are of them, which is what a previous comment mentioned. They protect their pack aka their family, their territory the same way any other animal does. They mean NO harm whatsoever to the community. Wolves are beautiful animals, and are sacred to not only Native Americans but other cultures as well. I myself have Native American blood in me, and wolves are one of my favorite animals. We all know the stories of the wolf being the protector watching over us. They dont do anything unless something wrong is done to them and they feel threatened. We as human beings do the same thing. We ourselves are animals in our own way. Stopping harming innocent animals and worry about getting rid of people like rapists and child molesters. They are the ones who should be hunted, NOT animals!

  48. Anonymous says:

Also, I dont mean hunted as KILLING them. I meant putting them behind bars for life!

  49. Anonymous says:

Wolves are living beings just like you and me. I live in an area where hunting is a big sport. I grew up seeing deer gutted and hanging from trees and if that's not cruel than I don't know what is. Wolves are one of my favorite animals. I understand that most of the time there is hunting in an area of a certain animal it is usually because they are over-populating and hunting keeps the population and diseases down. I'm sure wolves are being killed for the same reasons and/or they scare people because they are known to attack humans. Now this is what I don't understand... I've actually met people in my area who have pet wolves... just like a dog only bigger! And when I see that wolves are being killed for sport, that sickens me.
People need to realize that wolves are not a rumor to kill like pit-bulls are. Wolves are wild... They will kill.. They do it for food. That does not mean that they're gonna kill of the whole human population. So why should we kill them off? This whole petition is to create peace between man and wolf! And I agree with it 100%. Stop the cruelty in this world ... Stop Killing Wolves.

  55. Wolves are beautiful creatures! God put us and the wolves here on this earth to live in harmony with each other <3 Stop killing them when they are just trying to live their lives the best they can. Its bad enough we kick them out of their own forests so we can chop down their trees and build our homes, but now are we really such an evil society that we must torture these amazing animals too? Its not right! What if the tables were turned and we were the ones being hunted and trapped like this? watch as our familys and friends be murdered in cold blood for no reason? that would be one horrible life!
Leave these beautiful wolves in peace!

I think we need to look at it this way we will do anything to feed our children right? Well what if we didn't have hands only feet and teeth how would we feed our children. The same way as the wolves by hunting and killing the food. So do we need to hunt, trap, and kill ourselves?

Good Idea, so when do we vote in Human Hunting season. What would be the limit 4 0r maybe 2 could be too heavy ?? There does seems to be a abundance of human's. Not on any list or protected ?? This could cure the need for the herd to move into areas where Human's should not be, and cause harm. Maybe a study ?? They are very violent and kill one another for no reason. Should they allow traps and snares on Human's ?? Might be a little gamey ?? Hey we could force feed them fat to give them better appeal. Just saying if the shoe is on the other foot. Maybe we should rethink this hunting thing. Reverse thinking is healthy.

Why does it always seem the loudest people are the most misinformed ones? I ask you and everyone else that opposes or supports this issue to ask the some of the people that have been affected by their growing population. Also ask the DNR. Then weigh the pros and cons of the situation and see which one makes more sense. There is never a perfect answer to the situation, but there is an answer that makes the most sense. Unless you inform yourself and be open minded this country will go down the drain more and more. For all you know the damage done by the wolves costs more to the state and the taxpayers than the tourism dollars brought in because of them. With Minnesota having the budget issues that it does this could be a major factor. There are some many possible reasons behind the state giving it’s citizens the option to hunt wolves that you must first do your research and become informed. I beg you all to do that before you make a misinformed and emotion filled claims. Think logically and with an open mind.

Instead of trying to control the wolf population I say we should try to work on controlling the idiot population. The problem is simple, stop taking their land, that we fill up housing people that complain that they are there. Well, yes they were there first, we are the intruders forcing them to move then complaining cause they don't understand english and human ways. So the simple solution to the Idiots is to kill off yet another species that will not magically come back from the dead. Wolves are a very important part in keeping nature in balance and beautiful. Stop Killing the INNOCENT!
