Charlotte Casiraghi, a Gucci model and granddaughter of Grace Kelly, offends with Native American-themed outfit

Natives have a few things to celebrate in their ongoing culture war—they can claim victory in recent clashes with No Doubt and Paul Frank Industries.

And the run-in with Victoria's Secret was at worst a tie (the lingerie maker announced it will not include any footage of Karlie Kloss in a feather headdress in this evening's telecast of the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show).

But if change is coming, ever so slowly, on the home front, the state of American Indian cultural identity in the world still has a long way to go.

Take the getup worn by Charlotte Casiraghi, a member of the royal family of Monaco and the granddaughter of Princess Grace, for this past weekend's Paris Masters International Jumping Competition, an event sponsored by Gucci.

Britain's Daily Mail sums up the Native reaction in its headline: "Monaco princess Charlotte Casiraghi branded 'ignorant' over Native American costume at Paris showjumping event".

Casiraghi, known for her equestrian prowess, has appeared on the cover of French Vogue and currently appears in Gucci advertisements running in France.(Source)

This marks arguably the second year in a row that Casiraghi has displayed racial "ignorance" with her choice of costume at the competition. The following image turned up on Tumblr:

"So it’s for a good cause, huh?" wrote Tumblr user Prin-ses-ka-ro-LEEN. "How about supporting the end of minority stereotyping while you’re at it and knocking this bullshit off next year."

Here's some footage from the event posted to the Daily Mail's YouTube channel:

I believe its wrong on all counts. Its one thing to be of Native Descent but to ignorntally disrespect a culture that is not your own,is wrong on many levels.

I've heard that "imitation" is the sincerest form of flattery, but sometimes it's just not in good taste or respectful.

This just goes to show how many ppl out in the world actually have a brain and can actually use it! This individual apparently is a walking airhead as she didn't consider how disrespectful she was being towards the aboriginal culture. Now if the tables were turned and the roles reversed, how do you think the outcome would be. It would plastered all over the news and the aboriginal probably getting charged. That's just how the white society has become towards the aboriginals and still continues on to this day. It just annoys me to the core.

I am 100% Native American Indian I am a human Colleen not a YOU PEOPLE and you must be the one who is ignorant of how to talk to others .....

They are just not aware. Stupid. Don't take it too serious. Don't let others offend you so easily... Try to understand, that they are just not knowing what they are doing, because they have no brains. That's all.

  12. Ok, I know this will probably get some spanks, but, is it really so bad for others to enjoy who you are, your look and heritage and to want to celebrate that with you. Grant it her costume could definitely use allot of love to make it look much more authentic. Allot of people dress as their heros for halloween. Maybe instead of being so offended, consider it a compliment although not very well done. Perhaps explain that if she wishes to dress in tribal wear that it should be more authentic looking. That is assuming it was meant as a compliment and I guess that is assuming even a really well done costume wouldn't tick everyone off.

Peggy, read your remarks through another's eyes and see.
I find Irony in your remark.

I am a Native American and this again just shows how ignorant the white race has been. The sad thing about this... after all these years people outside the Native Americans have mocked, condemned, made fun of, and much more to the Native Americans. And now a so called Princess pulls off a disgrace like this.. If you really want to enjoy or learn from the Native Americas try going to a Pow-Wow where you can experience this and actually talk to us. There are many gatherings that are open to the public all over the world and especially in the United States. Nothing more disrespectful than a wantabe or someone who failed to educate themselves in the heritage of the Native Americans. oh and we dont wear costumes...they are called Regalia and all handmade, and the designs of our regalia is specific to our tribes and etc.

Cheap and Stupid is the correct thinking for me

Yall are wrong. WHite folks truly ARE this ignorant. they really don't know any better. They see that white kid in the twilight movie, pretending to be Indian, and they think that is authentic Native American culture. ANd thats just in AMerica. I would not expect I white person in Euroe to be so educated that they know the difference between real Native culture and fake Native culture.

  19. Anonymous says:

I think this is stupid to white people ...because you native Indians wear white people clothes and then you are offended when white people wear your clothes. If you are such of racist then don't ware jeans that were worn by cowboys that killed your people. Till then you have nothing to be offended by.

  20. Anonymous says:

How it this stereotyping? Did natives NOT wear paint, fringe and buckskin? Is it any worse than a native wearing a cowboy boots and a cowboy hat? Some folks need to get over themselves. They're no better than white folk.

  21. Anonymous says:

It's a costume. Same as dressing up like a power ranger. Funny thing, all the racist comments are from people that claim to be native american.
