Less Than 90 Days to Stop the Trade in Polar Bear Parts

In less than 90 days, 176 nations will be meeting at the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) to vote on whether to end the profit-driven trade in polar bear pelts, skulls, claws and other body parts. This is a crucial vote that will determine whether polar bears get the life-saving protection they desperately need, or whether they will continue their slide further toward extinction.

Polar bears are already facing a daily struggle with the melting polar ice that they need so desperately to hunt and find food from. With diminishing ice floes, polar bears have to swim farther and farther to reach one in their search for food. For many the distance is just too far and for those with young ones in toe, many time the babies cannot keep up and drown.

Scientists estimate that two-thirds of the world’s polar bears may already become extinct by 2050 due to the climate change, but despite this they are still hunted as trophies. Every year, the Canadian government allows hundreds of polar bears to be killed and carved up for sale around the world. It is a profit driven slaughter with no concern for the future of the polar bear species.

In the U.S., President Obama has proposed a ban on the trade in polar bears, but it's neighbor, Canada, is adamantly opposed to the ban. The United Kingdom and other key European nations are still undecided about this proposal. Therefore wildlife organization, Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) is taking the fight overseas and putting pressure on U.K. Prime Minister David Cameron and other European leaders, whose votes are needed to back the ban.

In opposition, Canada is circulating misinformation about the polar trade. The next few months will be critical to counter this false information leading up to the CITES treaty talks. NRDC will continue to work hard on this level. Currently more than 100,000 NRDC activists have already sent letters in support of a ban on the trade in polar bear parts. Please take a minute to send a message to U.K. Prime Minister Cameron, calling on him to rally the European Union against the deadly trafficking in polar bears.

That this is even having to be considered is simply reprehensible. We need to protect our wildlife to the ends of the Earth. All life is valuable. To discuss whether or not it is shows how egotistical human beings are.

As far as animals go, humans are the most dangerous animals on the planet. They kill for profit and pleasure. They have no sense of the value of any life but their own. Hunters should be prosecuted as murderers and sentenced to death. The value of life needs to be extended from human life to all life. If humans didn't overfeed their faces with meat, dairy liquor etc, there would be less disease and lesser opportunties to kill for sport and profit.

And again a whole species is going extinct for nothing more than greed. Who needs an polar bear rug, to show off to friends and relatives that they have the money to waste on something like this. This is really sick, pathetic and sad. Someone who thinks his desire for needless, expensive things is worth more than the rest of mankind not being able to see the beauty of these beigs anymore.

  8. Human forever will not learn from their mistakes! Why must make polar bear as a rug? Greedy conquer all the compassion and human now have no heart at all because their heart were being eaten by greed! Sick and sad to know this will happen to them and I hope we will try to help them before all these bear instinct from earth!
