Remembering Russell, Warrior for the People

Not a traditional documentary or a tribute film, "I'm coming back as lightning" is an immediate, electrifying communiqué from Russell Means himself and in his own words.

There will be reflections as he revisits events – celebrations, heartbreaks and solitudes that not only shaped him as an individual but also as a rebel and America’s most dynamic patriot; a warrior who will never give up. There will be controversy as the film dissects how our country dealt with, and continues to treat, the cultures and people who are irreplaceable parts of this land and its heritage.

We will also visually telegraph Means’ embrace of the awe inspiring nature, skies, landscapes and humanity that are a mystical, integral part of all of us but are too often taken for granted.(Source)

Russell Means, one of the leaders of the American Indian Movement, said he is treating his esophageal cancer with traditional and alternative remedies.

Means, 71, who lives near Porcupine on the Lakota Sioux Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota, told the Rapid City Journal he would not have accepted surgery even if doctors had not told him last month the cancer is inoperable. He said the side effects of radiation and chemotherapy are "unacceptable options."

"I'm not going to hang on to life under those conditions. No way am I going to hang on for that," he said.

Means became a contentious national figure during the 1973 Wounded Knee occupation. He was acquitted of federal charges.

Since then, he has become a successful actor, with 34 movies and TV appearances to his credit, and has continued to be an activist.

"I've told people after I die, I'm coming back as lightning," he said. "When it zaps the White House, they'll know it's me."

Means said he is not afraid of death.

"I'm not going to argue with the Great Mystery," he said. "Lakota belief is that death is a change of worlds. And I believe like my dad believed. When it's my time to go, it's my time to go."(Source)

Russel, while fighting the injustice of his people by the US Government and society as a hold helped wake up many American who did not know what was going on. It has lead to many attending Sun Dances and people's self education into the truth about the Native American. I thank him and all the members of AIM who brought to my attention a more truer path of knowledge about the proud, glorious American Indian.

I will miss him greatly. I am worried there is no one with his grace, skill, understanding, and learning, who will be able to carry on the fight with the oppressors. Mr. Means was able to confront his accusers in federal court, and win the battle against the well-financed federal prosecutor's office. He was one-of-a-kind.

Didn't know he had passed away or was even sick. I always admired him for standing up for what was right. He was one of a kind. Wish I could have met him.
