Dolphin Tangled in Fishing Line Approaches Divers for Help

Every year discarded fishing nets, lines and hooks take the lives of thousands of aquatic creatures. Infections can set in from deep cuts or animals such as whales and dolphins can actually drown by not being able to rise to the ocean's surface to breathe.

Earlier this month, a group of divers were on a nighttime swim with some manta rays off the coast of Hawaii. They were surprised to see a single Bottlenose dolphin approach and linger among them. They soon realized that the dolphin was unable to swim normally.

But it was only after the dolphin continued to circle near him so insistently that diving instructor Keller Laros begin to realize the animal was being more than curious. He realized that the dolphin was actually asking them for help. Upon a closer look he saw that the dolphin's movements were restricted because it had become entangled in fishing line and a hook was lodged in its pectoral fin which was causing the dolphin much pain.

What was even more amazing is that the wild dolphin then appeared to readily comply with Laros's efforts to help. The dolphin positioned its body to make Laro's work easier and seemed to put his total trust in this human stranger.

According to Martina S. Wing, owner of the touring company Ocean Wings Hawaii, who had filmed the moving rescue, "I was at the right place at the right time. I am honored to share the footage with all of you. Let's make better decisions for the ocean and the creatures that inhabit it. I strive to make a difference, and you can make one, too!"

brought tears to my eyes also, the dolphin knew the humans filming could help him. God has made creatures and man to be close like that but sin came in the way...sin greed, murder. This is what our planet should be peace, and love of all creatures. This shows great trust on the dolphin and man's part. Good Show and God bless the man filming so we could see this....God is good

Thank you, thank you, thank you for sharing this truly spectacular footage. Like so many others, my love for dolphins seems to be forever and I always knew they were always ways they communicated with humans. This film shows their gentleness & intelligence and thankfully, the gentleness and caring of another being willing to right the wrong that was inflicted on this beautiful creature. God Bless the man who dared to reach out and help to give that dolphin a better chance of a long life.

Sometimes it is public and known, but there are times when we help others what even we are unaware of. God bless these people for rendering aid to this beautiful and oh so intelligent creature. Amazing how the dolphin intuitively knew who to come to for help and how fortunate to find humans who actually wanted to help instead of destroy. Wish there were more like you - the world would be a lot different place

  34. Dolphins are very intelligent & very playful when I lived in Hawaii island of Oahu my friend & I would paddle out just for exercise & knowing the dolphins would show up! They would circle us on our boards then bump under the board & rub their bodies all along our feet & hands sometimes we would slid off & let one hang on for a ride! Boy I sure miss those days! It was always good luck for the dolphins to show up we did not worry the Sharks would bother us! Dolphins kick sharks butts! Aloha
