Meet the wolfman! Ex-paratrooper, 79, who is so close to his pack of 29 wolves they eat meat from his MOUTH

It's clear to see who is the leader of this wolf pack in Germany.

Werner Freund, 79, sits at the top of the table in this pack of 29 wolves.

For 40 years the ex-paratrooper has hand reared and lived among wolves at his sanctuary in Merzig, Germany.

The magnificent creatures, naturally feared by any layman, all behave playfully and submissively towards Werner, who has over the years exerted his dominance in the pack.

The enclosure at Wolfspark Werner Freund, in Merzig, in the German province of Saarland, contains wolves from six different packs across the world.

They include European, Siberian, Canadian, Artic and Mongolian regions. Some of which look fairly similar, but the snowy white Arctic wolves are the most distinguishable from the rest.

At feeding time, Werner must ensure he continues to feed first and disallows any of the hungry and salivating wolves to come near, in order to maintain the respect of the pack.

It is for this reason that they do not attack him and, instead, lick his face and act playfully when they are not feeding.

Werner established the wolf sanctuary, which is spread over 25 acres, in 1972 and has raised more than 70 animals over the last 40 years.

The wolves, acquired as cubs from zoos or animal parks, were mostly hand-reared.

UPDATE: Werner Freund lived so closely with wolves. Werner Freund has died from illness at the age of 80.  Rest In Peace

My name is Donna Moore and I wanted to say thank you so much for caring for these magnificent sentient beings. Here is the United States, we are losing our battle to save our wolves. So many PRO WOLF groups unwilling to put petty differences and ego's aside. You are sir, a hero in my eyes. May you be blessed with many more years with your pack~

I love it.....I guess he's like me and lives with wolves to escape the madness of military. It is the only peace i find. I was a ranger in vietnam in "68. I have had wolves or wolfdogs 13 years now. I do not do well without them. animals, even the dog takes food outta my mouth even when I don't want them to. when I go for a snack, I think," what can i snack on that the animals won't try to take from me? I'm skinny as hell.

Hi - I'm Terri Sutton and live in California and have SO much respect for you and what you are doing for those wonderful animals.

In western states (Montana, Idaho, and so many others) are opening up hunting and trapping areas due to lobbying by hunters and ranchers. And I think the ranchers are using 'our' public lands on which to graze their cattle and, accordingly, kill wolves.

Traps, at least, MUST be stopped, period. They are torture devices, plain and simple - and I have pretty vicious thoughts about them. Anyone who is trying to find and de-set such traps must be VERY careful and know what you're doing.

Again thank you so much for what you are doing; I know they bring you a great deal of joy.

  16. You are amazing Mr. Werner and have done what I would love to do in the United States. I have thought of buying land in Montana but the wolf hunters are too numerous in that state. However, Washington and Utah may be good locations.

    How did you get started?

In my dreams I could be like you Mr. Warner. Alas, I live too much in a world where I want my dogs as a part of all that I do in life and realize that with wolves those things would not be possible....NOT due to them, but due to the people I must be around not really understanding how to behave around even my DOGS, let alone a wolf.

Thank you for keeping the ones you love safe....they are so misunderstood and maligned and persecuted.

First off i would like to say thank are an amazing man.Spending time with the wolves must be so exciting. That has been my dream ever since I was young .I have been in love with them.It does my heart good to know that there is some one who has the same passion as I have for these magnificent creatures. It breaks my heart every time a hear all the nagative things being said about the wolves.I believe I have sign every petition they have out there to put the wolves back on the endangered list.I am so upset with all the killing of these majestic animals. And I am so a shame to be a part of the Human race.Everyone should really educate them self about the wolves with an opened heart they would only see they are just survivors trying to live just the same as human's and raise their family.

Hi from Canada,I truely believe that wolves make better humans than humans do.I'm just you Mr.Werner I would love to live with nature than with man.All we seem to want to do is harm or kill our families, friends, neighbors or anything that doesn't agree with our views.Since I cannot live with the wolves thank you for caring about them may God continue to bless you and your pack.

I am sorry to hear about the death of Mr.Freund.I admired the man.He has done something to me which is and having such passion for the wolves.I wished I would of been able to experience what he did.i think maybe the law maker's in our country could of learned things about the wolves from him which might of made a difference in how they see the wolves.they are not killers but survivors. If they could see how this man interacted with them they respected one and wolves can co exist. The united States just won't budge and give the wolves a chance. They still want to come up with ways to destroy the wolves .We all should marvel at Freurd at the passion and love he showed for the wolves. I know it has sadden many at the lost of to me a great man.I'm sure his wolves are morning for their leader and friend.God bless you and your wonderful will be greatly missed.I hope that his work with his wolves will continue on for along time I hope someone will keep the public updated with the wolves and how they are surviving. Rest in peace.
