Oklahoma to allow horses to be slaughtered for meat (Video)
OKLAHOMA CITY (Reuters) - Oklahoma took a step toward allowing livestock owners to slaughter horses for food on Friday when the governor signed a bill that permits the practice, but processing plants must first be authorized by the federal government.
Governor Mary Fallin's action legalized the slaughter of horses so that their meat may be prepared and packaged for export. But slaughterhouses must get U.S. Department of Agriculture authorization, Fallin said.
The slaughter of horses for food had been illegal in Oklahoma since 1963 and was carried out only in Texas and Illinois until Congress stopped it in 2006. The congressional ban was lifted in 2011.
Fallin said horse slaughterhouses in Oklahoma would use more humane practices than those in Mexico because they would be inspected by federal authorities.
Horsemeat was at the center of a scandal that erupted in Europe in January, when testing in Ireland revealed that some beef products also contained equine DNA.
The United States Humane Society and animal rights activists opposed the new law in Oklahoma, while livestock interests said the change preserves their private property rights and will benefit horse owners.

horse rescues are over loaded with horses ! step-up and adopt two or three. And don't forget the thousand of dollars per horse it cost to keep one properly. Then there would be no need for horse slaughter !
This is completely unacceptable. You should be ashamed of yourself. Not only is this inhumane, but horse meat is not fit for human consumption anywhere in the world. We cannot be known for the state that slaughters these beautiful creatures!!!!! For greed and money, that is what it all comes down to. Humane? Killing is killing and dead is dead!!!! Congratulations to Senator Eddie Fields and our special thanks to the CREATOR of this horse slaughtering bill, Rep. Skye McNiel. She is the one that is responsible for this travesty. She is the real CULPRIT here who is going to be making all the money. What a very thoughtful thing for Gov. Mary to make this horrible announcement on Good Friday. All three of you politicians have no conscious. You all three have committed a terrible sin and come election day, we will welcome your opponents with open arms as your replacements. Rlly come on, horses are basicly who has took us to where we r now, theyve fought in battle side by side with people. So respect them for bring up half of our nation plowing the fields, draging logs to build peoples homes or for their fire in the winter, and so much more.
