Reporter saves beached dolphin (Video)

Yesterday morning while out on a fishing trip along the Gold Coast, Paul Burt and a friend ran across a beached dolphin.

The dolphin was lying 150 feet from the water line, and appeared to have been trapped by the quickly receding tide and was obviously clinging to life in the sand.

Normally Paul Burt is a fishing reporter for Australia's Nine News. It's his job to deliver the latest reports on weather and boating conditions for anglers but now thanks to a recent act of rescuing a dolphin which was caught on film, he's found himself as the subject of the story.

Burt and his fishing partner managed to drag the dolphin back to shallow waters, where it flicked its tail and swam off to safety. He described the experience as, "We thought he was dead to start with. But when he saw us it was like, 'The rescuers (are) coming to get me'. He was excited. It was so surreal. You had to do something for him."

The dolphin appeared to still be in good health as he swam away, no worse for the wear from his almost fatal experience.

On the video below you can hear Paul Burt saying, "It's okay, it's okay," as he tried to comfort the dolphin, which he said had "tears" in its eyes when he found it. "I wouldn't leave you alone, buddy."
