WATCH: Dog Protects And Nurses Trapped Kitten

Last Monday a South Carolina police officer got a call to check out a dog that was trapped down in a ravine. A local person had reported hearing a dog barking a lot in the area near Anderson, S.C.'s North Pointe Creek.

Officer Michelle Smith reported to the creek area and was quite surprised with what she actually found. There was the dog of course but she was nursing a baby kitten at the bottom of the ravine.

It turned out that the dog was actually barking for help on behalf of the small kitten that she was protecting.

Officer Smith surmised that the dog had likely only stayed in the ravine to care for the homeless kitten. "I'm thinking that she just couldn't get back up with the kitten, and I don't think she was willing to leave the kitten," Smith said.

Both the dog and the kitten were taken to the Anderson County P.A.W.S. facility where they are being kept together while waiting for the dog's owner to come and claim her.

The little dog is continuing to try and nurse the kitten but her milk is not sufficient to sustain her so additional bottle feedings are being given at the shelter also.

Although it is not uncommon for dogs to play the role of mom for babies that are not their own, this dog took it a step further by calling for help when she refused to leave the kitten behind. Be sure to watch the video below to see the little duo in action together at the shelter.
