Crews take in little animal until they could get it help (Photos)

Some volunteer firefighters in Harford County are used to saving the lives of people, but they're also committed to saving the lives of little animals in need, and that includes a baby fox they rescued late Tuesday night.

Members of the Joppa-Magnolia Volunteer Fire Company were called to the 1700 block of Melwood Court in Edgewood around 10 p.m. Tuesday after getting a call that there was a fox stuck in a sewer.

Crews said they found a baby fox that was stuck at the bottom of a storm drain, so firefighters climbed down and rescued it. The crew noticed that it walked with a limp and appeared to have an injured leg, so after trying to contact some veterinarians without luck, they decided to take it in until they could get it help.

Firefighters said they used their Twitter and Facebook accounts back at the fire station to reach out for ideas on how to get help for the baby fox, which they named Pierce. The company said it eventually made contact with the Chadwell Animal Hospital, which helped advise them on how to take care of the baby and how to handle it so they wouldn't have to be concerned about rabies.

Crews said they kept Pierce safe and gave him food and water until they were able to take him to Chadwell on Wednesday morning, where specialists will take care of him until he can be taken to the Phoenix Wildlife Center in Baltimore County

The JMVFC is using the incident to also remind people that the Harford County Health Department is sponsoring a rabies vaccination clinic at the fire station at 1403 Old Mount Road South in Joppa from 2-4 p.m. Sunday. Officials said it's important to have pets vaccinated against rabies since it is present in Maryland. There will be a $5 charge per animal, and only dogs, cats and ferrets will be accepted.

For more information, call the health department at 410-838-1500.
