Rare White Wolf Swiming across Northern Saskatchewan lake

A chance encounter on a lake in Northern Saskatchewan has a fisherman talking about the white wolf that swam his way.

Bob Thacker, from Vancouver, was on an annual summer fishing trip with his brother when they spotted something unusual on Shadd Lake.

"I saw what I thought was a bit fat duck," Thacker told CBC News. "And as we approached it I thought that's not a duck, it's like a polar bear or an albino bear."

As their boat motored closer, Thacker said their local guide quickly identified the animal as a rare white wolf.

"It was a white wolf that you don't see very often," Thacker said, adding it was even more unusual to see one swimming across a relatively large lake.

Thacker learned from his guide that the wolf may have been part of a pack and been kicked out for some reason. The wolf may also have been tracking prey.

"I had never seen a wolf before and was just amazed by it," he added. "We got very close to it, but we didn't want to disturb it or frighten it because it still had a ways to swim. So we just got up close, took the video and took off to let it be."

Is the wolf alright? Did he get acrossed? Wonderful you guys got as picture of this but is he ok? That kind of bothers me. As I just read above me and see there is a theme going here I don't feel as bad.

Did you at least stay with him to make sure he got back to land?

  3. Unknown says:

The boat made him change course. I sure hope he made it all the way to the shore. Why didn't the men keep an eye out?

Its not in a position to defend itself, it will probably panic if the boat got to close.

National Geographic did a doc. on wolves in North America. They are very adept swimmers (like most canids), and even in mid-Winter will swim great distances if it means getting to more prey. Its coat is transitory. They change from predominantly white in winter to more of a white/grey in warmer weather. Look up the video for an amazing documentary on wolves.

  6. Thank you guys for sharing and not bothering it. A previous comment I agree with, would probably panic if got closer. The wolf was very calm and motoring right along and looked like it knew exactly where it wanted to go. For once man did not intervene. Thank you.

I don't thing nature needs people 'helping' all the time, I don't think the wolf needed to hitch a ride....or a lifejacket,so i'm pretty confident the wolf made it across the lake

I did have a mixed breed, half white wolf and siberian husky, He was white and big, his name was Boris and he hated the water.. but he could swim. for you that are wondering, I got him near the canadian border

would really like to know if he/she made it to shore.

  12. for your info, anonymous wolf hater-10/8@11;04 PM, it is not the wolves that r lowering the Elk population! it is man and his inability to leave wilderness alone for the wildlife take away habitat take away numbers... DUH, besides wolves need to hunt to live, man does not, it is just a want!

Wolves can swim up to 8 miles due to webbing between their paws

  14. Anonymous says:

    Ment webbing between their toes

  15. Wolves are great swimmers. There's a whole pack that make a big swim every year on the West Coast of BC. Salmon are also one of their main staples of prey. Lots of studies have been done on this Wolf family. It's very educational.

all animals deserve to live the same.. I'm assuming by the comment they are a hunter and want to keep the Elk so they can hunt it and eat it...either no animal is worthless except possibly you
