Buried in this Daily Mail feature on Johnny Depp is this tidbit that could pay big dividends to American Indians:

"Such is Depp’s commitment to the Native American cause, he is planning to spend millions of his own money to return land, Wounded Knee, in South Dakota, to their ownership.

The site, the scene of an 1890 massacre, is up for sale for $3.9 million. Local Native Americans say they cannot afford to buy it. Depp is outraged.

"It’s very sacred ground and many atrocities were committed against the Sioux there. And in the 1970s there was a stand-off between the Feds (Federal government) and the people who should own that land. This historical land is so important to the Sioux culture and all I want to do is buy it and give it back. Why doesn’t the government do that?"

Is he really prepared to pay for the land?

"I am doing my best to make that happen. It’s land they were pushed on to and then they were massacred there. It really saddens me."

Much more to come on this developing story.

  1. Iets pocketmoney for him so why the sensation. One film he buys it 3 times. do it and do not talk about, then you are COOL.

Amazing! I really hope this goes through! I am reading Russell Means' book "Where White Men Fear To Tread" & I continue to hope this generation understands what Means, Dennis Banks, Leonard Peltier, John Trudell, the Crow Dog family & the ancestors that were slaughtered at the Knee, went through to make sure children were no longer forced into boarding schools, allowed to keep traditional values, dances & language.

Yes, Wounded Knee should always be occupied by it's originally intended caregivers of that sacred earth!

but its not HIS responsibility. It is the responsibility of the government. if he just buys it, it becomes news for a few minutes and is forgotten. its better to stir the nest and get the people buzzing about it so it is dont the RIGHT way.

I understand doing something in a good way without attention. And maybe this is just a PR stunt, maybe not. However even bad things can have good outcomes. By him speaking out and getting attention for the issue means public has a chance to be outraged and for them to remember all of our history. It is a chance for all of us to remember the ugliness that happened in our country , think about it , so we don't ever make the same mistakes again. Really, if ends up in tribal lands, who cares how it gets there, long as this ground stays sacred ground, to which we can all go to and remember. Far as I am concerned should be national monument, for all people of all colors, so we remember what hatred does to a nation and to human beings if we allow it to be acted on. It isn't a lesson for just Native Americans, it should be for every human being.

It was their land to begin with, then promised by treaty. The white "owner" abandoned it around 40 years ago. It should go back to the Lakota anyway. Hopefully, Mr. Depp will work out something with the "owner" who is ripping off anyone who makes this purchase.

  19. Lunachick says:

I just spoke to a reporter who has previously interviewed Jim Czywczynski, the man who is selling Wounded Knee, asking him to follow up on Depp's claim of wanting to buy the land.

He said Mr Czywczynski has never been contacted by Depp or any agent of his to inquire about buying Wounded Knee.

This quote from Depp came from the UK tabloid The Daily Mail, and is over a month old, originally published on 6/7/2013. If Depp was so resolute about Wounded Knee, seems he would have gotten the ball rolling...

  23. Anonymous says:

To the people who say "do it quietly" you obviously don't know much about the modern oppression of the Native Peoples. In the 60s there were parts of the country where a white man could shoot an Apache and the law would look the other way, because they weren't people anyway. In the 70s, people were murdered at protests trying to reclaim traditional land and now, treaties are still being broken while North American governments dump pollutants in the environment where native people live off the land. Return their land loud and proud. We would do well to return to a way of life that is sustainable. Hell, if I could, I would live with my tribe--- but they're all dead the bloodlines diluted into white American culture. Do it quietly my ass.

  24. Anonymous says:

I think the comment someone made about fundraising to buy the land is a valid one. I think it is doeable fairly quickly with todays technology. If the Lakota have good lawyers and it was promised in a treaty, it is worth a shot to try and get it back, especially if it gets strong vocal support from the general public.

  25. Anonymous says:

Iwantitall, you are so crass, jealous, that you did not do it.......I think it is a marvellous thing and Goods up to Johnny Depp to bring it to the public and remind people how vindictive they have been in the past. He is right the Government should give it back............

  26. Anonymous says:

This is an amazing gesture from someone is trying to right a wrong. To all the haters, this will be one of the greatest things to happen to the Lakota since that historical and horrible tragedy happened on that land. The gift of one's tribal lands being returned to them will be a wonderful healing and way overdue. In fact, it should be the government returning this land to the Lakota, but obviously that ain't never gonna happen. Johnny Depp has a heart of gold for doing this, and this will be a great celebration for the Lakota for healing in mind, in body and in spirit in connection with the land.

  27. Anonymous says:

Personally, I feel the person who THINKS they own the land by virtue of the fact their family settled on it, AFTER Whites having taken it away from it's original occupants, now wants to even think of selling it back to the original occupants is ludicrous. This man and his family should be ashamed of themselves. For Mr Depp to say he would buy it is a nice step, however like others, I will wait to see if that comes to be. If he does attempt it, it will be interesting to see if the currant occupant will indeed sell it or try to gain more notoriety by upping the price and trying to hold out for more. We can already see how GREEDY the currant person who thinks he owns this land is. And his family. As a Native, I can tell you I'm sickened by the whites who would do this in the first place and be able to sleep at night with their conscience.

  28. Anonymous says:

You couldn't be more right. Just do it. You don't have to advertise it. I do agree it needs to happen. It is very sad what happened.

  29. That would be a great thing if Depp did this. I would not want our government involved in this. They are to corrupt and then their is the chance that the government just goes in to take the land again. I am all for this land sale to be given back to the rightful owners.

    Johnny Depp
Natives in North America and now in South America are being continually robbed of land and its resources which were to be shared. The stealing started in 1492 and hasn't stopped since. Do not trust them they are not trustworthy people their trail dosen't lie. Governments continue to lie to everyone. Only one thing matters to them and that's the economy. Medicines, water (which became a human right just this year, we'd die without it..... and they're still doing it, even after their own scientist warn them of their continued path of destruction. This planet is only so big and only has so much resouces. We all need to understand that and so some respector we're all going to suffer because of a few very stupid people.

Whether or not Johnny Depp does purchase the land for the native people to own, again, at least he is stepping forward to make us aware once again how this country was developed, at the cost to the people already living here. We should never own any sacred land to Native Americans, it belongs to them. The government should and could seize the land and return it to the rightful owners. If they insist on letting it go on the market, then the asking price of $3.9M is nothing to our budget. If Johnny Depp does step in and purchase the land, then at least he is also raising awareness about a very important issue of our time.

  57. Claude says:

Respect +++1000 to Johnny Depp for this. As a member of the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma - words can not express the symbolic value of this ground - not only to the Sioux - but to all Native Americans. THANK YOU MR DEPP. You have a good soul.

  62. It is a most honorable act of Johnny Depp to buy The Wounded Knee land and return to the Native Americans.
It is sacred ground. Many lives were lost there and many are buried there. It is time our people were given back what is rightfully theirs. This could be a beginning for the return of lands taken by the U.S. Government by false treaty. It is heart breaking to drive onto a Native American Reservation and see first hand the poverty, illness, etc. in which they live.
Many Blessings to Mr. Johnny Depp for your most generous act of honor.

I hope that Johnny Depp IS sincere. I am of Cherokee descent, and my husband was 1/2 Sioux. As a Native American, I would love the land to be returned to the Lakota so that it could be a healing. I just wish that the reservations would get help for the people. My brother has visited reservations in South and North Dakota. He said they were "bad places, with poor housing, trash every where and no place actually showed the pride of our ancestors". My brothers and sisters, we have to do something about our reservations. Why are such a once proud people allowing themselves to continue to be victimized by the white man? I am not full blood, but my grandmother was. I heard the stories of her people. I lost relatives on the Trail of Tears. Where is our pride in ourselves? We need change, we need healing. Nobody is going to do it for us. Show the government that we are not Victims; that we are intelligent, empowered and proud Natives!!!!!

I think this is wonderful and think his announcing it a good thing as it might inspire others to do similar acts. We the People are the Government and need to step up when the government fails to act in our interests. The Land is owned by no one in essence. In the illusion of private property that has been created by all of us, this has been forgotten. So to buy the land and then hand it over to the people is a way to bring back the deep values of respect for the Land and for the People who honor the Land. I don't mind that he tells about this because he is modeling respect and a sense of duty to the Land and the Earthkeepers who have kept the land sacred in their hearts. I hope this happens. Thank you Johnny for channeling the power of Spirit to show us all what we can do to help restore the balance.

It's coming time for people to care for people and the land they share and live on. Not time for greed and ignorance. If someone has the gumption to step up to the plate good on them, it should happen more often from a people collective, If it is someone with a high profile even better, people tend to sit up and take notice and if it corrects a wrong doing even better. Too many people are lazy and blase and oh someone else will do it instead of community getting together and standing united for all the wrongs to be fixed.

Hi , I have read most of the comments. I visited Wounded Knee once. It was a very spiritual experience. Especially after visiting the Little Big Horn Monument. I took my family there when my daughters were still small children. It was a long drive in the middle of nowhere but well worth the time it took to get there. I think a car stopped every twenty or thirty minutes. There was a young boy there selling dream catchers and I got into a conversation with him. In a low whisper, he told me that a guy who had just left a small shack on the side of the hill was an AIM member. I am happy to say I knew that the AIM members were involved in the stand off with the FBI. I told him I had been to Little Big Horn. He said that the government was trying to make a National Monument of Wounded Knee but that the Lakota were against that because they felt Wounded Knee should stay in its present deteriorated condition as a reminder of how the US government had treated the Native American Peoples. He showed me the ravine where during the massacre the women and children ran and tried to escape the US soldiers. They were killed where they were hiding. I still remember some of the names on the tombstone over the mass grave in the cemetary. I can still smell the incense burning and see the unsmoked cigarettes visitors had layed on the gravesties. It is a very special place just like it is. As far as I know, the comments from DENISE are correct. Wounded Knee already belongs to the Lakota and Johnny Depp has no business becomming involved in this. If the land is owned by a member of the Lakota Tribe then this is something they need to settle among themselves.

I would like to share one last thought. Greedy people and generouse people; environmentally conscious and environmentally unconscious people; wealthy people and poor people; educated people and uneducated people; people who like tecnology and people who dislike technology; mean, disatisfied and negative people along with nice, satisfied and positive thinking people all live among us. All of these charachteristics also exist in the people we call Native Americans. Please accept my apologies if anything I have said has offended anyone. Sincerely, Robert

The government should give it back to the people. With an apoligy for all the hurt and hate they created . They should also have to make restitution to all the people for the lives and land they stold. Remeber if it wernt for the indians the first people at plymoth rock would not have survived. So this is how the people are repaid for there frendship??? Were is the gratitude for there survival ??? We could have all lived as the people did and shared what mother earth provided for us. Thank you Mr Depp for your support

  107. Having grown up in Sioux County Iowa, spending college years in South Dakota, and many time at both Rosebud and Pine Ridge I would be pleased if Depp would do this. It is sacred land, and Depp would be honoring our ancestors by giving the land back to the people that it belongs to. I say go for it Johnny!

It has to be Sioux Land --not US land beholding to the US government for taxes. Much Karma release done properly and many souls returned to their proper families---- Do this right the US government and with proper ceremony--This event holds heavy on you and Depp's proposal / little eager, can be done in a way all benifit---has to be Sioux Land by Congress rule to be official. World will benifit if from the heart but if from a publicity shit hole all is lost. Daniel 444

Best Wishes that this proposal from Johnny Depp is a true statement & not fictional. I hope for the best of all possibilities and that true healing will take place.
    Many Blessings to All concerned.

And what about all the first immigrants go back to Siberia then, from whence they came?? Applying this, same logic, the first immigrant hordes have an earlier, but no more valid claim. what was done by the Europeans was in a lot of cases uncool, but this notion that first immigrants somehow sprung up.mystically on this continent frok the very soil and have some transcendent, supernatural right to it thas long since been disproven.

I hope Johnny Depp is able to actually able to do this. It would be a great honor for ALL American Indian if he could buy back Wounded Knee. So many atrocities went on there and it is time those lands go back to those who truly deserve it. I am of Cherokee descent, but I respect ALL our American Indian brothers and sisters....and those lands SHOULD go back to those who RIGHTFULLY deserve it....the American Indian.

Those commenting about pomp and media - well it is important not for him to take credit but because it is something that needs to be in the public eye. This country was to be 'the land of the free'. Our freedom was built on the demise of others.

  115. This is a wonderful and appropriate step towards honoring the Sacred Space that was and is Native America. Mr. Depp, whose background includes Native Blood like so many Americans, is someone who has the resources, the spirit and the understanding to make this happen. He should be applauded. It is my prayer that this action, on the part of this one astute man, flows out and captures all of America so that the First Americans of all Nations are honored and the history, culture and spirit is finally paid the respect it deserves.

I don't think it is a PR stunt. I think it is wonderful he is saying it publicly for there are many Americans do not know what the US govt did more then once at Wounded Knee. Perhaps by Depp following through with this, it will also finally get the US govt to release Peltier...at least we can hope and pray. Hopefully it is God's time to answer all the prayers said for years on behalf of Peltier.

  120. I am not a Native American but the plight of the American Indian has a special place in my heart. I think it would be awesome if Johnny Depp is able and willing to do this. Where else but in the United States can the government sell land that people are buried on? The events that have taken place here are tragic. The government is all about lying to get what they want no matter what the cost is to get it. Someday there will be nothing left to take.

Another liberal idiot with a liberal idea of history. Somehow, we have made Indians a "perfect culture" that did no wrong in our revisionist history.

Here's an idea, quit feeling sorry for yourselves and looking for a handout.

Don't do it Johnny. Reparations are deserved by the whole world if you want to look at atrocities. They have casinos, they have money, so have so much money but don't help Pine Ridge, they are letting their own *relatives* die there. Johnny, just think. Just take time, all the time to think.

I was born in America, my parents were born in America, therefore I am a Native American. And I am responsible for the care of this Earth and all IT holds. AS ARE WE ALL! I have not researched the "records" of MY "bloodline", I only know or care about the "records" of MY "bloodline" back to my Father's Father, and Mother's Father, those whom I've known. However, I do "know" and "revere" all MY/OUR Ancestors, and "all my relations". I pray to them ALL to hear us and help us. Remember this ... we ALL are related from the beginning. AND, in the beginning there was no "ECONOMY". WE ALL then created an economy. OUR creation has corrupted our "history" and OUR "present"; let IT not take away our "future" or the future of those who come after us. WE ALL need to "right the wrongs" of OUR OWN creation, "the economics of OUR SELF-created economy". Unfortunately, it's ALL about the money today. BUT, Spirit, Good Deeds and Prayer can move OUR "creation" (money) in good directions. I pray, that WE ALL pray, that those with the money, move it in the directions it needs to move. i.e. The Four Directions of this Earth, with the Spirit and the Intent to heal the damage done to ALL MY RELATIONS and to the Earth. Hopefully, we can "right the wrongs" done by OUR OWN "creation" and "heal and protect the creation" given to US ALL in the beginning. Bless those with good intentions and those who walk in a sacred manner, for they/we are able to make good things happen for US ALL. This IS powerful, and when more than ONE are gathered together, it is even more powerful. May We and Spirit bless the outcome of what Johnny Depp has brought to the table yet AGAIN. Thank you. I am full blooded Oglala hunkpapa Lakota and cree and apache my great great great grandmother died at woulded knee and my great great grandmother was one of the infants found underneath there deat mothers at that place my uncles were there in 1973 they were there when russel means and denis banks took it over I am soo thankful that johnny depp is going to buy it because it keeps it out of the hands of some rancher or some person who could bulldoze it right over with out a care in the world or worse the united states government! I wish him the best!

If the land is for sale, what is the problem, does it have to take a man like Mr.Depp to give back what is rightly belongs to the Indians. The U.S. Government should do that. Mr. Depp, thank you for stepping up, and caring,I wish you the best.

Of all of the times that I have been to Wounded Knee, I never in a million years thought it might be sold and treated as a site for building or anything else but a sacred place to visit and meditate. I certainly hope Johnny Depp does find a way to buy it and return it to its original purpose . . . a place to contemplate the true meaning of love and equality among all men (and women) no matter the color, race, religion, or anything else!!!

It should never have been for sale in the first place. It sickens me that the government doesnt just return the sacred land to the ones it belongs to in the first place. I am afraid that money is not the only thing holding this up. 4 million is not alot to a multi millionare and Im sure he has friends or could get enough donations from the Hollywood crowd to purchase it and give it back. There must be other factors we are not aware of that keep this from happening. It woud take nothing for the government to cut through any red tape BS and just make this happen. This just feels very wrong and anyone with common sense or a heart would want to do the obvious right thing. I trully hope this sacred land is retruned quickly.
