Monday

A dog left trapped for 77 hours in a collapsed building after severe earthquakes hit much of north-west China has been pulled from the rubble alive by rescue workers.

The canine was stuck in the debris of the house in quake-hit Lalu Village, Hetuo Township, Dingxi, in northwest China's Gansu Province, for more than three days.

But the dog managed to survive by drinking rainwater before he was eventually found by rescue workers scouring the region for survivors on Thursday.

It is believed 95 people died when earthquakes struck much of north-western China on Monday while more than 800 people needed hospital treatment.

Rain then sparked further landslides last night - killing at least nine people and burying another eight.

The worst landslide buried 13 people in Nanyu village and nine bodies have been recovered, the official Xinhua News Agency said.

Rescue efforts are under way in the neighbouring village of Yongguang, where four people were buried and are listed as missing, the report said.

The area along the Yellow River has rolling hills of loose soil blown south from the Gobi desert. Thunderstorms have loosened the terraced hillsides that were made unstable by the quake.

About 123,000 people were affected by the quake, with 31,600 moved to temporary shelters, the provincial earthquake administration said on its website. Almost 2,000 homes were destroyed and about 22,500 damaged, it said.

Urban areas where buildings are more solid were spared major damage, unlike the traditional mud and brick homes in the countryside.

The government's earthquake monitoring centre said the quake was magnitude 6.6, while the US Geological Survey said it was 5.9.

with all the negative things I have heard about Beijing and there animal cruelty which is horrendous I thought this was very kind of them to help that poor animal. Some people there I guess do have hearts but certainly not enough. There is no protection for animals in this country and they are slaughtered for their hair or what little meat they have on their bodies. Others need to be aware of this. Just check CVS and their makeup section and read the labels before you buy any makeup brushes, you will be surprised.

So wonderful to see kindness still exists in China! Please help put animal protection laws in place like those of most other countries as the atrocities committed against animals in China are absolutely horrendous!

if i had a magic wand or god would give me just one wish, i would wish to save and protect all of the animals on this earth. i agree with comment anonymous 6.04am one brave act is not enough in a country where animals are slaughtered and exploited by the millions, especially dogs for their fur. Yes please before buying check labels and buy animal cruelty free products, research on the internet and be aware.

I'm touched. I just hope this beautiful survivor doesn't end up in the market for dog meat. They have a festival for eating dog meat. First dogs are crammed in cages on top of one another. Their mouths get duct taped. in front of patrons, the establishment will hang the animal and beat it. They are skinned, boilded and torched all in front of their cage mates. This method of cruelty is to distress the dog so its meat would tasted sweeter. Go to NoToDogMeat Facebook page ~ or go on You Tube. You will find how horrific animals are treated. Also, they have a 3-day dog meat festival in Yulin where the crowd will beat dogs to death. Crowds of families and children gather around laughing and enjoying the atrocities. There are those who love their dog, but the government forcefully takes them away because the animal is dangerous. Many were forced to give up their German Shepherds, Labs, and other big dogs ~ only to find them at the meat market. Cats aren't safe either. They too are boiled, deep-fried and skinned. Also right now, S. Korea is having a 2 month long dog meat festival. They are just as brutal and Godless. Add Thailand, Taiwan, indonesia and Philippines to the list. So yes the picture is beautiful and hopeful, but I hope the out come is the same as well.

I pray for this dog that it will remain safe. The horrors of animal cruelty in China and other countries is immense and pure evil. We must stop it. Educate yourself and help join in making a difference. Your voice does count in the life of so many dogs. Soi foundation is a good place to start.
