The Amazon rainforest, with its over 2 million square miles of lush jungle, is among the wildest places left on the planet. But there in that wealth of biodiversity, still shrouded in mystery beneath the forest canopy, exists one of the most fascinating life forms of all -- fellow humans, like us, but who are living free from our narrow confines of 'civilization'.

Recently, an employee from Brazil's National Foundation of the Indian (FUNAI), captured this extremely rare footage of an isolated tribe traversing the jungle in the Amazon basin. The group, numbering nine individuals, has been identified as members of the Kawahira -- a nomadic community that has avoided contact with the outside world.

This encounter occurred in a large swath of rainforest reserved for the indigenous, located nearly 100 miles from the nearest town. Law prohibits anyone to trespass upon the Kawahira's land, with the exception of FUNAI monitors who help ensure that their right of self-determination is not being infringed by outsiders.

Unfortunately, however, due to the tribe's close proximity to the more modern frontier, their isolation remains threatened. FUNAI workers have reported finding bits of trash, like plastic bottles, in the reserve -- evidence that the ills of 'civilization' are beginning to spill into the last bastion of unintegrated humanity.

Up until recently, the tribe's presence in the region has been largely inferred by the discovery of abandoned habitations and tools, making this brief glimpse both encouraging and, at the same time, hauntingly raw.

Just leave them be. They will be happy never knowing we exist.

I think they have a right to be left alone we should still be living the way they are our planet wouldnt be in so much danger if we were like them

it always amazes me when I read about people who have been able to stay out of civilization. but, naturally, man has to infringe upon them. there will be the "do gooders" who think that religion, and saving the poor things, and the people who will want to exploit them, and the millionares who will take the land & make more money off it......... wait, this sounds like this country and what we did to the native americans and the Hawaiian people. skeptical? oh, yeah!

IT IS SAD THAT MEN AND WOMEN HAVE NO RESPECT FOR LAW AND FOR INDIGENOUS PEOPLES. THIS IS SAD BECAUSE THESE INDIGENOUS PEOPLE ARE FINDING POP CANS AND TRASH ON THEIR LAND THAT IS AGAINST THE LAW TO ENTER THEIR LAND. WE ON INDIAN RESERVATIONS SHOULD HAVE DONE WHAT OUR ANCESTORS DID MANY YEARS AGO, MADE THE PERSON MOVE TO THE OTHER RESERVATION IF THEY MARRIED SOMEONE OTHER THAN A PERSON FROM THEIR RESERVATION.

This video puts these people at risk. I agree with others that they should be left alone and not video taped.

  15. Reading the comments, I became aware that some of you don't know what is going on in the Amazon. I will tell you . Deforestation and oil extraction....this is rapidly encroaching upon these free peoples. this beautiful tribe. I hope you will join me in every effort to conserve and preserve our earth and the good it still has in it. You can read more about the Amazon on Mongabay.com. You can help by voicing your opinion and petitioning elected officials. We do not need to destroy the remainder of the earth to survive.
