Dogs have an amazing sense around humans who are handicapped or disabled in some way or just depressed. They seem to know just what kind of attention is needed in order to connect with them.

They are wonderful at reaching people who have withdrawn from life such as those in nursing homes or hospitals or other types of group homes. Many times people who have stopped talking and smiling and basically given up on life will begin to talk and laugh when they get to spend time with a dog.

In the video below, Himalaya is a dog who refuses to give up on a little boy who is withdrawn and doesn't want to play. The toddler who lives Buenos Aires, Argentina has Downs syndrome which has caused him to shy away from most physical contact. Himalaya is very gentle and persistent with him though and the little boy ends up giving her a hug. Hopefully they will both get to spend more time together in the future.

Down's Syndrome

Down syndrome (DS) or Down's syndrome, also known as trisomy 21, is a genetic disorder caused by the presence of all or part of a third copy of chromosome 21. Down syndrome is the most common chromosome abnormality in humans. The CDC estimates that about one of every 691 babies born in the United States each year is born with Down syndrome. It is typically associated with physical growth delays, a particular set of facial characteristics and a severe degree of intellectual disability. The average full-scale IQ of young adults with Down syndrome is around 50 (70 and below is defined as the cut-off for intellectual disability), whereas healthy young adult controls have an average IQ of 100.

Many children with Down syndrome are educated in regular school classes while others require specialised educational facilities. Some children graduate from high school, and, in the US, there are increasing opportunities for participating in post-secondary education. Education and proper care has been shown to improve quality of life significantly. Many adults with Down syndrome are able to work at paid employment in the community, while others require a more sheltered work environment. - Wikipedia

I think we have all heard that dog backwards spells god. Dogs have the purest, most loving spirits, especially labs. I had two yellow labs years ago. They are gone now and I hope I will be blessed to have another one soon!

It is just wonderful at how persistent the dog is with the child. The video is just lovely and I think it is so very adorable. This is a very special dog with such a big heart for the children to help them and this child will come out of his shell from what the dog has done with him.

  10. Dear Romania............This is what you are decapitating, beating to death, throwing away alive in plastic bags and exterminating. It's one reason why this kind of gentleness, selflessness does not exist in your country. May you suffer more for it.

This is why I love dogs so much.

For the Gypsy. What you wish to other come back to you ! Romania has so thousands of stray dogs just because people feed them and love them. Now all these dogs will be legally killed because that's what the foreigners want ! so all the killing may be on the sold polititions ,the ones who asked them to do that and others. Be carefull what you say .

Innocence and sweetness.... Children and dogs, no matter if they are in perfect health or have afflictions are just those who sing in perfect harmony. The Lab was so gentle and the little boy just needed time to process what was happening... Love is the universal language.

What a sight. God is so perceptive to have made these special animals. Were that most humans could emulate their kindness.

I thought the ModernDayGypsy was commenting on the inhumane, murderous treatment of children with downs syndrome - but of course inhumane treatment of life in any form is horrid. But lets do something to bring change not spit out curses.

ModernDayGypsy, your right, if more people in Romania were more responsible and the government would help people to spay and neuter their pets the numbers would not be what they are. There would be putting prices on pets heads and people wouldn't be murdering animals for small amounts of money. If I am correct Romania is a mostly Catholic country, St Francis is watching what you are all doing to God's creatures, places them in plastic bags alive and watching them die while struggling for air, beating them to death and any other disgusting murderous way humans can think of to kill them. Gypsy is pointing out what dogs are full of compassion, love, loyalty something the people of Romania know anything about. What Gypsy is talking about is the killing cull Romania has going on all dogs, stray or family pets right now. They are murdering any animal they find whether your pet is out in your yard relieving itself, it's a fair kill. She is not criticizing the child, she making remark about how loving the dogs can be.
