A German Shepherd Dog who was abandoned in a park while she was in labor was saved by a Police Officer just in time.

Police Officer Jennifer Bloom was driving by the Newark's Lakeshore Park in California on Sunday when she saw the pregnant dog tied to a bench and in distress.

When she went over to the dog, the dog was already in labor.

"You know we go through training on how to help a woman deliver a baby,” said Officer Bloom. "But we never had to deal with puppies."

Officer Bloom gently loaded the dog into her car and drove to Central Veterinary Hospital. While in the back seat of her vehicle, the dog was actively giving birth.

The German Shepherd ended up delivering nine puppies. Seven survived, but two did not make it. Now named Bristol, the German Shepherd did not have a microchip or tag. If no one comes forward to claim her she, along with her puppies, will be available for adoption soon.

Police are investigating the incident as an animal cruelty case. Anyone with information about the case is asked to call police at 510-578-4237. Information can also be left anonymously on a hotline at 510-578-4000, ext. 500.

people are so cruel and nasty. I can never wrap my head around anyone hurting an innocent animal.I hope they catch the bastard who did this and throw the book at him!

Beautiful shepherd, looks so much like mine. Resembles a DDR (East German or Check) dog. Markings (sable and brindle on the face) are not common to North American black and tan or red. I'd be looking for a breeder of East German or eastern European shepherds. They might know.

What a lovely girl. How sad to have been left like that. When my girlie had her puppies I was tearing open the sacks and handing them over to her to wash. I slept next to the whelping box for a week because if a puppy was in distress momma would come up and get me out of bed to help her. She felt better if I was right there and we all slept better.

  17. So glad for this mom and pups .How many like this just suffer and die of 'human' cruelty. Many so-called humans should never ever touch a dog.Dogs are so generous with their love for people....

Wait a minute! How do we know the dog was really abandoned? What if something bad just happened to the owner and he wasn't able to get the dog free in time? What if the owner was kidnapped? Or killed?

So much cruelty in our world. How can people treat animals so badly? Thank you Officer Bloom for helping this lovely dog.
