Angel, a tiny yorkie puppy was born five weeks ago and only weighs 163 grams. Her owner, Kim Passero, is doing all she can to keep the tiny baby as healthy and strong as possible.

Her 400-gram siblings are kept in another room as she is too fragile to be with them. Angel may one day be the smallest dog in the world.

Currently the smallest dog in the world is Milly, a Chihuahua from Puerto Rico, which measured 9.65 centimetres from her feet to her shoulder blades this past February. Angel can’t be measured yet because she’s not that stable on her feet, but Dr. Abbasi, her vet guesses her height is only about five centimeters.

In order for a dog to qualify as the world’s smallest, it has to be at least a year old. The category is based on height and length, not weight. This is done because Guinness doesn’t want to encourage owners to under- or overfeed their pets. Passero says her smaller dogs don’t have health issues.

"I’m sure there are people out there who are doing it for all the wrong reasons, for the money,”"she says. "We’ve done it from our heart, whatever happens, happens. It’s more people than it is, I feel, the dog. You have to really be careful because of their size, your job is to protect them. Angel will not be sold. She needs to be protected forever, and of course, we have such a bond."

Although Passero is excited by a potential record, but it’s not the priority. "Honestly, I really hope she grows, it would be easier for her," she says. "I love her no matter what."

BLESS <3 I got a Petit Brabancon puppy now nearly 10 months old, who was born just 90 gram <3 The breeder did not know if he would make it, so she gave him the name "Guardian Angel";) I guess that helped, cause now he is 3 kilo, but will always be on the "smaller side" As long as there is life there is hope, and this cutie gets all the help she needs - GOOD LUCK <3

I think it is cruel to try to have the smallest dog. It becomes a puppet, not a puppy.
