A wildlife rescue centre in Winnipeg has stepped in to care for an eagle found covered in oil.

The creature was found by a man in Hollow Water on Oct. 25.

The bird had landed near a garbage dump for commercial fishers and got covered in fish oil. The eagle then couldn't fly away.

The man who found it put it in a kennel and drove it to Winnipeg, dropping it off at the Winnipeg Humane Society. The Manitoba Wildlife Rehabilitation Organization then took the animal into its care.

WHS officials said it's lucky the man brought in the bird, since the oil weighed it down and prevents regulating body temperature.

"So, he was lucky to have found her when he did because they can get really chilled and expire quickly,” said Dr. Erika Anseeuw from the Winnipeg Humane Society.

Staff at the wildlife haven have been washing the oil off the eagle.

"And then once all of the oil is gone, we'll give it some time to get it's waterproofing back onto its feathers," said Tiffany Lui from the rehab centre.

The creature may need to recover for a couple of weeks.
