Firefighters Rescue Baby Fawn trapped under rubble in Wash.

Some heavy equipment typically used to rescue people from car wrecks helped save a tiny fawn trapped under heavy rocks. Wednesday morning Ed Bettencourt and his wife woke up early to find a deer pacing around their backyard and acting strangely.

“The deer was just trampling all over the place, we could see all the hoof marks,” Bettencourt said.

Sensing something was out of place, the Bettencourts went out and looked around their backyard. They heard a faint whining sound, but didn’t see anything. As soon as they left, the deer came back and circled a decorative rock wall in the backyard.

The Bettencourts went outside again, walked to that spot, moved some rocks and “saw this little fawn’s face looking back at us,” Ed said.

The fawn was trapped under the rocks, but they were too heavy to move by hand. Ed called his neighborhood fire station, where the person who answered recommended that Ed call 9-1-1 and report he needed assistance.

A team of firefighters from Clark County Fire District #3 responded and got to work trying to free the fawn. “We decided ‘hey, let’s use these hydraulic tools and move these rocks,’” said firefighter Joe Gray. After about 10 minutes, firefighters moved enough rocks to reach in and rescue the fawn.

“Hearing the crowd cheer us on and they clapped when we rescued it, it was kind of fun,” Gray said.

During the rescue the doe approached the group several times and was never far from her offspring. Once it was free, the wobbly-legged fawn ran straight to its mom and started nursing.

Gray said it appeared the fawn was climbing on the rock wall when it fell through the cracks and got stuck.

It looks like that baby might have been born that morning and rolled down the embankment into the opening. Look how wobbly it is and i don't think that is from being tucked into the ground. Given the opportunity, most firefighters and cops are great people.
