A Good Samaritan stopped and helped an injured dog that somehow ended up in the HOV lane of the Eastex Freeway early Friday.

The dog was spotted in the outbound HOV lane near Tidwell shortly before 8:30 a.m.

Animal Control officers were called to the scene, however it was a Good Samaritan who was able to get there first.

Rickey Young, a father and contractor, said he heard about the problem on the radio and wanted to do something to help.

“I’m just kind of a softy on that stuff,” he said. “I have a dog and would hate to see him on a highway like that.”

As it turns out, the yellow lab mix was badly hurt. Young took her to safety.

TranStar cameras captured the whole thing, including the skittish dog at first trying to back away. Yet Young was able to entice her with his sandwich, and soon the yellow lab was in his truck.

“I could see that she was thankful and she was happy to be in a safer environment,” he said.

They went directly to the Houston SPCA, and the quick actions may have made all the difference.

The dog’s veterinarian said she had broken bones and internal bleeding. Had no one stopped to help, she could have died on the road.

Since she does not have a chip or a collar, she is not believed to have an owner.

But she does have something she did not have before, a chance, thanks to Young.

Good to see people with a heart, and it's great for everyone to see this! Some where someone will come across an animal in need. Think of this guy and do the same thing help in anyway you can. We've helped lost injured pets and wild animals, the feeling you get inside for saving them is unreal., the look in the animals eyes say it all, when you save them. The world does need more people like him, and it starts with you who say this. Give it a try, and you'll never stop helping. I haven't.
