Nearly 700,000 signed a petition against the archaic 1804 law It gives France’s 63 million pets more protection against cruelty

According to Wednesday's publication of the Telegraph, France has decided to acknowledge that pets are more than just property.

Contrary to a ruling in Oregon this week, which overturned an animal-cruelty conviction based on pets being seen as simple "property," the parliament in France voted to grant rights to pets, a move which should make animal-cruelty cases and custody cases, easier to prosecute.

The move to change the status quo came about after a strong push by animal welfare groups - nearly 700,000 individuals signed a petition asking for the long-standing law to be overturned.

Reha Hutin, who heads of the animal protection society which created the petition, noted that it was:

“ridiculous to see pets as pieces of furniture that can walk by themselves”.

Meanwhile, back in the United States, in most areas, pets still fall in the same category as couches, lamps and shoes.

When the people of a country have had enough, and we all pull together to tell the leaders about the changes needed - then the voice and will to change can accomplish great things. Never underestimate the power of your voice, of your vision, to save the world. One by one we can do our bit, plant a tree. Together we can plant forests, we can shift mountains!

bet if people went out and got people to sign a petition to give animals rights most if not everybody would sign it

To bad we need to have a law to tell us to do something that SHOULD come NATURALLY.
LOOK into the eyes of your animal, really look, there's a feeling & intelligent friend looking BACK.

I agree with Judy Smith ... we shouldn't need a law... it should be natural respect and love for all animals. Then again, there are some very cold cold people in this world.
