We've all heard poignant tales of rescue dogs and cats, but here's an incredibly heartwarming story about a rescue crow who has become inseparable from the family that saved him.

Yahoo News reports that last spring, a family in Ottawa, Canada, discovered a badly injured baby crow on the side of a bike path. Although the family already owned two cats, they decided to take the baby bird home and nurse him back to health.

The Renaud family named their new pet crow, Walter, and under their diligent care, he was soon able to fly again. The problem? After becoming healthy again, he refused to leave their home. Instead, Walter chose to take up the position of beloved family pet.

"He's like another child in our family," Zachary Renaud told CBC News.

Although Walter lives with the Renauds, he is free to come and go as he pleases, and he mostly feeds himself. However, he rarely strays far from the Renaud house, reports MSN Canada.

On the first day of school this year, Elissa Renaud realized that Walter wasn't about to go anywhere anytime soon. According to CBC News, the bird accompanied her in walking the kids to school, a tradition he continues to this day.

"As I walked the kids to school, he trotted along behind us and I realized, yeah, he thinks he's part of us and he's going to walk the kids to school and take care of them and be part of the gang. I realized that he was going to stay," she told CBC News.

“We go on bike rides around, and we talk together, and sometimes if I'm feeling sad I'll tell him because I know he won't tell anyone else. Or secrets my friends have told me, and I really need to get them out, I'll just tell him because I know he won't talk," Livia Renaud told CBC News. "I really love him and if something ever happened to him I would be really, really, really sad." (Source)

For the last 5 years I have been feeding wild cats from the outside cathouse. Further along, there are 4 big tree stumps. I put a cup out there too. Wilma and Fred have been expecting this handout every year. I love watching them. Their babies are very, very funny.

What a wonderful story! Crow's are so so smart, would love to know one of these individuals personally myself. It's great that they haven't tried to cage him either, that he id just allowed to roam freely, in or out of the house. This family has been very blessed with the wisdom of Crow Medicine, so I highly recommend that they check out the books written many years ago by Bear & Company about "Totem Animals", that speaks about Crow Medicine in it. Also, the book "Animal Speaks" by Ted Andrews has lots of useful information about Crow's and what we humans can learn from them, and other animals. Wonderful reading, and thank you for sharing this very touching story. Love it!

All creatures have Hearts and Soul's, He knows you saved his life, amazing how animals have more power to Love than some humans. Hope you have a long life together!

When I lived in Wyoming my ex wife and I rescued a robin who had been abandoned and fed and nurtured her, we named her squeaker cause she had a squeaky little endearing chirp, Squeaker lived with us and was never a captive but free once she could fend for herself and catch her own worms and bugs. she used to come to our store and everyone loved her, children used to come in and visit her and hang out with her she was a sweet little being. One day one of our local dentists came into the store and squeaker flew over to say hello and land on his shoulder. (she liked to land on peoples shoulder and speak in robin language in there ear, make sweet little chirping noises and pass on information) Well this scared the hell out of the dentist he was swatting at her and ducking and ran out of the store. It was not more than a day before fish and game showed up and said they must take her, we put up our best argument but law and justice is blind I mean really blind. They put her in a little cardboard box and took her away, apparently they released her somewhere in Wyoming because it was not more than a few days before she came back but it was not the same, we just talked to her in the tree and she would fly to ground and look for night crawlers because we had an abundance of them. I will never forget her sweet unconditional love nor will I ever forget the respect I once had for fish and game died, had she been a captive I would understand it but because of a frightened dentist they did poor little squeaker an injustice, she knew who her family was and was forcibly removed so she could become a good bird, squeaker and all of your relations will always be in my heart...heart emoticon
