The South Dakota State Historical Society is celebrating the 25th anniversary of the start of filming for Dances With Wolves.

The award-winning film was shot primarily in the state. It featured Lakota language dialogue that was translated by the late Albert White Hat of Sinte Gleska University, a tribal college on the Rosebud Sioux Reservation.

A slew of Native actors and extras starred in the production. The cast included Graham Greene, Rodney Grant, Floyd 'Red Crow' Westerman, Tantoo Cardinal, according to IMDB.

Dances With Wolves was released in 1990. Kevin Coster, who directed, produced and starred in the film, is being invited to a 25th anniversary event next year, the State Historical Society said.

Events are being planned for Pierre the weekend of July 18-20 to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the first three days of filming of the Academy Award-winning movie “Dances With Wolves” in the area.

  1. I really liked this movie!! As a white person I think both the Native American and White cultures were shown in a fair way!! But I was very disappointed with the end, the white woman and Kevin's character should have stayed with the Native Americans, you can never fix stupid by going back!!

Dance's with Wolves is my all time favorite movie. We piled in to my Toyota Celica, cause my Mom's Nissan maxima wouldn't start and saw it in the theater on Christmas day. I also read the book. It was written by a dishwasher.
