Wild animals respond to body language. The body language of the retriever clearly shows that this dog is no danger to the deer. I've seen this "cooperation" between species many times: Scrub jays sitting close to a hawk without fear, because they understand that this hawk just ate and is resting, etc., etc. I truly believe that we still do not understand how accurately wildlife observes it's enemies, and their current intentions. I think this deer thought the dog was a harmless clown. Had the dog had shown any kind of tension or aggression in his movements, the deer would be gone in an instant. They know far more than we give them credit for..

"Play! Pay Attention and Play. I want to play!" "No, Need to retrieve rocks! Maybe some other time." "But I want to Play!" This is a cute moment and glad that it was caught on film. Beautiful interaction.
