“She will regain her ability to walk, or she will gain wheels to help her around”

Team members at a remote elephant research camp in Botswana are used to seeing their share of injured animals, but were shocked to see a small dog dragging herself towards them one day.

Poppy must have sensed that these people could help, because now she is loved and getting the medical treatment she’s needed.

The Okavango Delta is home to nearly a thousand species of animals, including warthogs, baboons, hippopotami, rhinoceroses, zebras, wildebeests, elephants, hyenas, crocodiles, cheetahs, lions, and wild dogs. But it was a domesticated dog who would soon be making a home of the camp.

"This little pup came crawling into our research camp in the Okavango, unable to walk, but full of love and seeking help. She was severely injured, with her back legs completely immobilized. Our area has both predators and livestock, and we don't know how she was injured, but it's amazing she survived and made her way to us. She is bursting with the sweetest spirit. We drove her to the nearest veterinary clinic, an 8-hour drive on terrible roads and ferry crossing over the Okavango River. " said Amanda Stronza

Poppy will stay with the research team – her temporary family – for at least the next month until they can decide what course to take from there – surgery, a more permanent home, etc. Many people have already expressed an interest in adopting her.

“She already has so many people all over the world who love her from a distance and are checking on her progress daily and are eager to see a happy outcome, namely adoption into a loving family,” Stronza said. “She will regain her ability to walk, or she will gain wheels to help her around. I think she has a bright future!” said Amanda Stronza

Incredible. God bless. Make a support strap to hold her up just enough till she builds her strength.

What a beautiful, courageous little dog. Her determination to survive is an inspiration to everyone. Hope she will eventually regain mobility in her hind legs, but if not, she can live happily with 'wheels'.

The hope and love you see in the eyes of a dog such as Poppy is very awe-inspiring and moving for me. I want to have that much hope despite great struggles just as Poppy carries so much in her eyes everyday despite this temporary challenge she is facing. A lot of people really love Poppy now, I hope she gets the love and help she needs like seriously. Love from the PH, More powers to Stronza and the team helping Poppy!!!

Just to see that sweet face brought tears to my eyes, but not because of being sad but happy she managed to find people to help her. I pray for this sweet girl and hope she can regain standing and walking on her own. But, if not, wheels will work just fine too. I can't wait to hear about her ongoing treatments and when she finds her forever home. Love to Poppy!!!
