A local artist is contributing to the huge comeback for Marvel’s first Native American character.

The character first debuted way back in Avengers #80 then starred in his own short-lives series in the 1970’s set in the Old West.

The new Red Wolf will fight crime in the American Southwest, and Jeffrey Veregge, an acclaimed Pacific Northwest artist, is part of new Red Wolf team.

Veregge is a member of the Port Gamble S’Klallam Tribe based out of Kingston, Washington, and is also of Suquamish and Duwamish decent. Veregge will create covers, design and consult on the title. The artist on the book is Dalibor Talajić.

“There’s not a character like Red Wolf out there right now,” Veregge told Mashable. “As a native, I’m really excited to see that he can do things, he can figure out things and stand with Captain America, and hold his own in this universe.

That’s what’s awesome about it: You have all these characters of different nationalities and ethnicities, but it’s not all about their culture.

It’s about them being a hero.” Veregge also created the new logo for longtime Seattle comic book shop, Zanadu Comics. You can see his work online, or wait until December when Red Wolf #1 arrives.

This is incorrect, warpath appeared in 1984.
Red Wolf already had his own comic in the in the early 70's, I collected them 1972/73. They featured Johnny Wakelly and Thomas Thunderhead, who were Red Wolf before William Talltrees

This is great, but... John Proudstar, AKA Thunderbird, was an Apache superhero created by Len Wein (cocreator of Wolverine) and Dave Cockrum for the X-Men in 1975. So... no, he's not the first. First in a long time.

Not the first Native American Marvel character at all. Forge (Cheyenne), Dani Moonstar (Cheyenne), John Proudstar and his brother John (Apache), Shaman (First Nations), list goes on

The first version of Red Wolf was from Avengers (1st series) #80 with the cover date of Sept. 1970. His own series ran from May 1972 - Sept. 1973, a nine issue run. That's 5 years before Thunderbird.

Um he wasn't the first, Apache Chief was and he grew huge to kick the shit out of bad guys. This is just an attempt at getting more fandom for marvel. A capitalist ploy to make money.

  8. The very first Native American hero was Wyatt Wingfoot from Oklahoma... started off in the 60's as Johnny Storm's college room mate... despite having no super powers he regularly adventures with the fantastic four, solved issues with diplomacy, athleticism, and survival skills and even befriended black panther... he later went on to date She-Hulk and had the longest running relationship with her.
