Tuesday

Two women have been arrested after Facebook posts suggested "a purge" and "shoot a Indian day."

RCMP say the women, a 32-year-old from the northern Manitoba city of Flin Flon and a 25-year-old from Denare Beach, Sask. — a village just southwest of Flin Flon — face charges of uttering threats and public incitement of hatred. Charges are pending against a third person, RCMP said Tuesday.

The RCMP "takes these matters very seriously," they said in a tweet.

Police aren't releasing the women's names until the charges are formally entered in court. On Tuesday morning, CBC News reported that a Facebook user known as Destine Spiller lost her job at Urban Trendz Hair Studio in Flin Flon and that former employers posted statements denouncing posts by a Facebook user known as Raycine Chaisson.

After Spiller's new vehicle was spray-painted, she posted on Facebook that she would "kill some Indians when I get home" and proposed a "shoot a Indian day." Chaisson, posting in response, suggested a "24 hour purge."

Screenshots of the posts — and comments in response — were shared hundreds of times on Facebook, with many posting opposition to the comments. Spiller apologized on Sunday for acting out in anger.

"I wasn't thinking when I said it," she wrote on Facebook. "I was mad about my brand new car being trash for no reason."

Flin Flon Mayor Cal Huntley said his community of 5,000 people has a reputation for being safe and welcoming. He hopes this incident doesn't change that perception.

"You have a very emotional response to what appears to be ... some damage to the young lady's property," he said. "I'm certain that her comments do not in any way indicate the character of the city of Flin Flon."

How sad when we've only had our rights as indigenous people for some 30-40 years and yet a majority of non-natives do not want to acknowledge their ignorance has an effect on our people. Our children have to live with the hate as well and they don't understand why it's happening or why skin color matters so much.

Pretty bad when you are indicating murdering another human being. Bottom line, they are 100% racists, and if we want to pull that card, I'm pretty sure white people do drugs, rape, vandalize, steal, lie, kill, molest children, etc. Why is it when an Indian or black person commits a crime all of a sudden a racist person wants to linch us? As far as I'm concerned white people are on my land, you are giedys in my country so simmer down ladies, tell us how you really feel.
