Officials have confirmed that Yellowstone wolf 926F of the Lamar Canyon Pack, known to some as “Spitfire”, was killed for trophy less than five miles from the northeast entrance to the park. She was the daughter of legendary she-wolf 06.

The importance of a keystone predator such as the wolf to a balanced and resilient ecosystem is undeniable. Studies also show that since their return over 20 years ago, wolves have delivered an economic boost to Yellowstone’s surrounding communities. University of Montana researchers found that wolves bring an estimated $35M in annual tourist revenue to the region.

Trophy hunting of wolves brings in money too. Montana wolf hunting licenses cost $19 for residents and $50 for nonresidents.

Perhaps Montana should take a closer look at the economics of wolf hunting. Seems that Yellowstone wolves are worth a lot more alive than dead.

"We are heartbroken to share the news that the wolf killed outside the park was 926F of the Lamar Canyon Pack. This was confirmed by FWP biologist and the park. 926F was the daughter of the legendary 06. After 06 was killed by a hunter in 2012 the Lamar Canyon experienced so much misfortune, but 926 fearlessly kept this struggling pack together. Please join us in our fight to establish and provide a safe area outside the park" Wolves of the Rockies wrote on Wednesday.

Wolves are a keystone species — an essential part of the ecosystem — and when their packs are decimated, this can have a resounding impact on other species. "The importance of a keystone predator such as the wolf to a balanced and resilient ecosystem is undeniable," the Wolf Conservation Center (WCC) explained.

The presence of these iconic wolves also impacts human communities, too. The Lamar Canyon Pack draws many visitors to Yellowstone each year, helping to support the preservation of one of the country's most unique natural treasures.

  9. when their packs are decimated, this can have a resounding impact on other species. OR...When their population is left unchecked, it can have a resounding impact on other species. They will overpopulate, kill all of their own prey, and the masses left to starve, or kill your pets to survive.

Hey, Unknown, when the wolves disappeared from Yellowstone Park, there was a huge problem with the other species overpopulating to the point of decimating the vegetation and causing death and hardships to all the living things there. Since the wolves came back 20 years ago, the Yellowstone wild life and vegetation has stabilized. Also, in case you didn't actually read the article, there is legalized hunting in Montana. The famous wolf in question was hunted illegally as a trophy. Come back when you know something.

  11. as stated this is heartbreaking news. I understand keeping population in check but how are these hunters getting in the park to hunt!!! I pray for the safety of the rest of the pack....

My heart breaks. Why is trophy hunting even allowed? It is all about ego. I curse you trophy hunting jackals with a death as hollow and worthless as this innocent animal's. May mankind find you worthless and vile in life as well and may you be destined to decline in every way possible. When you get to the bottom, go f**k yourself.

  13. Unknown says:

    Rotten humanity!

  14. Good, wolves are no better than coyotes.
