Once again a baby polar bear is being raised by humans after his mother could not care for him. The one month old male polar bear named Siku was born in a Danish zoo and had to be removed from his mother when he was only 2 days old. Siku would have been in danger of dying if he had been left with his mother. He was observed on the surveillance video moaning and being upset so the zoo personnel made the decision to remove him.

The zoo has reported that little Siku is doing just fine now and is being cared for by three people giving him round the clock care. He is currently up to 7lbs.(3.2 km) compared to the 3 lbs.(1.8kim) he weighed at birth. The zoo is located in Kolind, Denmark.

Just one month old, Siku will need 24/7 care for the first year of his life. Polar bears are threatened by the effects of climate change, as shrinking Arctic ice forces them to struggle to find food. Scientists estimate that there are some 20 – 25,000 polar bears left in the wild. The animals are listed as ”threatened” by the US Department of the Interior under the Endangered Species Act, and are classified as “vulnerable” on the IUCN World Conservation Union’s Red List of Threatened Species.

Hopes are that history will not repeat itself as with Knut the polar bear in the Berlin Zoo who died a tragic death last winter and that extra care will be taken to ensure that Siku lives a long and happy life.
