Normally a pod of dolphins tends to number at 16-20, but recently off the coast of Dana Point, California there was a mega pod of dolphins that reached up to 2000 dolphins. It was an amazing sight to witness that day. Researchers have speculated that the dolphins were most likely racing a whale-watching vessel just for fun. The dolphins were guaged at swimming up to speeds of over 25 mph that day. Dolphins are very intelligent and also have a well developed sense of fun. The video below provides a close up view of the dophins having a wonderful time that day. It is very exciting to watch them having so much fun.

DOLPHINS ~

Dolphins are marine mammals closely related to whales and porpoises. There are almost forty species of dolphin in 17 genera. They vary in size from 1.2 m (4 ft) and 40 kg (90 lb) (Maui's dolphin), up to 9.5 m (30 ft) and 10 tonnes (9.8 long tons; 11 short tons) (the orca or killer whale). They are found worldwide, mostly in the shallower seas of the continental shelves, and are carnivores, eating mostly fish and squid. The family Delphinidae is the largest in the Cetacean order, and evolved relatively recently, about ten million years ago, during the Miocene. Dolphins are among the most intelligent animals, and their often friendly appearance and seemingly playful attitude have made them popular in human culture.

Play is an important part of dolphin culture. Dolphins play with seaweed and play-fight with other dolphins. At times they harass other local creatures, like seabirds and turtles. Dolphins enjoy riding waves and frequently surf coastal swells and the bow waves of boats, at times “leaping” between the dual bow waves of a moving catamaran. Occasionally, they playfully interact with swimmers. Captive dolphins have been observed in aquariums engaging in complex play behavior which involves the creation and manipulation of bubble rings.
