The feds are offering up to a $2,500 reward after someone killed a red wolf in Tyrrell County.

The federally protected animal was found September 4th near Creswell. The red wolf was wearing a radio collar to help track it.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service says the maximum penalty for taking a red wolf is one year in prison and a $100,000 fine. The feds say after being nearly extinct, a re-population program now has about 100 red wolves roaming their native habitats in five counties in northeastern North Carolina.

Anyone with information on the death of the red wolf should call Special Agent Sandra Allred at (919) 856-4786, Refuge Officer Frank Simms at (252) 216-7504 or North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission Officer Robert Wayne at (252) 216-8225.  (Source)

Note: Red Wolf (Canis rufus)

Red Wolves are only one of two species of wolves in the world. The other species is the larger Gray Wolf. In 1973 they were declared an endangered species and in 1980 the USFWS officially declared the Red Wolf extinct in the wild. However the USFWS captured 17 red wolves prior to 1980 and has used an extensive breading program in over 38 zoos and nature centers around the US to bring their numbers back to around 265 individuals as of August 2005.

In 1987 the Red Wolf was reintroduced first into the wilds of North Carolina and it is estimated that there are over 100 Red Wolves in the wild now. Another 165 or so are still in the captive breeding programs. Read the USFWS pamphlet to your right for more detailed information about this reintroduction.

This is heartbreaking. We not only take their habitat, but, they are apparently hunted for sport. I just don't understand what people are thinking. I really don't.

  7. This will happen. It is inevitable. There is no point, and in fact it goes against the traditions of any civil culture or society, to immediately curse and condemn the wrongdoer. Many Americans, indigenous or not, do not support the idea of wolf reintroduction. This has been the case in Idaho, Montana, New Mexico and Arizona, even Alaska (with basic wolf conservation in mind). The fringe of the anti-wolf conservationists may be responsible for these most disturbing of actions, but they are only human, in the end. Education is the key to restoration of any such non-human animal, not conflict. Wolf does not care about how angry some people get at one another when something like this occurs, for only humans are capably murderous and thus susceptible to such emotional reaction; and in the end, our salvation is as, if not more, dependent on our ability to reconcile and get along with one another, than wolf's is in terms of such matters. My heart in this case goes out to the family of this animal, and I hope that the extended family is available to take over, as applicable.

I am so tired of ranchers saying that wolves are killing all their cattle.Hello they was here long before man came here. You can not kill them off they have to be here. They need to thin out the deer mule deer elk.You know you hunters should be thanking the wolf. Why because they take out the sick and old to make the heard stronger and healthy. You ranchers the same thing the wolves cut down the heard so your cattle can graze.Next thing you ranchers will be wanting to kill all the deer because they are eating all the grass. When does this stop.We need to learn from our past and don't repeat it.Because in the long run we will pay for it and by then it will be too late to acted!!!!

    It is just barbaric!!!!

  10. What is wrong with people?? Ignorance and influence by ill informed farmers/ranchers caused by man-made issues are blamed on animals. We have invaded and pushed them out of their habitats and on top of it people killing for sport..... UGGGGGHHHHHH I would love to get a hold of these "people". The land and animals are not ours to destroy and kill......

You could contact Defenders of Wildlife...they've been fighting wolf kills in Montana, Wyoming and Idaho. They may know about this already, but it wouldn't hurt to let them know that people like you are out there and want to see these kills stopped in your state. Bless youfor caring! And good luck!

Why don't the government take all the babies that are aborted and feed them to the wolfs, then the wolfs won't be killing my goats, chickens, and cattle. After all, all you people believing in abortion only kill millions of babies a year now, even the ones in the states that allow a women to check in a hotel, squart in a toilet a baby that has had an injection that suppose to make it be born dead, not all ways the case, but xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx, this makes about as much since as some of the comments I've read so far, so, tell me how ya feel about this government law? Should we be spending millions of dollars to protect a wolf, or the precious baby that mom don't want?????? I actually talked to a kid that was suppose to have been aborted. Ask him
