Please Oppose BLM Roundup & Removal of 700+ Wild Horses from the Diamond Mountains in Central Nevada

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is proposing to remove 85% of the wild horses in the Diamond Complex this January 2013. Tragically, this would leave only 126 of the approximately 826 wild horses that currently roam free on the 255, 204 public land acres.

The controversy to this is that cattle/sheep livestock use of the public lands grazing allotment in the Diamond Complex has already depleted the vegetation. However the BLM proposes to reduce the harm to the range that was caused from overgrazing by sheep and cattle by gathering up the wild horses. At the same time they plan on making no effort to reduce the impact of livestock grazing.

The mountain range is approximately 60 miles long and 12 miles wide. During periods of heavy snowfall, the wild horses will move off the mountain into the valleys. Many beautiful horses of all colors roam this mountain range. This includes bays, sorrels, browns, palomino, buckskin, chestnut, grey, variations of roan, and pinto/paint.

The most recent roundup from here was completed in 2004. The gathering involved the capture of 643 wild horses followed by the release of 116 wild horses back to the range. At that time, fertility control was also implemented on 86 of the released mares.

This continuous assault on America's wild horses by the BLM must be stopped. The government agency claims it is done to keep down the overpopulation of the horses, and at the same time reduce grazing damage by the horses.

This is a coverup for the real reason which is to continue to allow ranchers to take advantage of the cheap usage of public lands for their livestock. It is a travesty that this assault on our wild horses is taking place under our noses in order to benefit a special interest group - The Cattlemen's Association. Please take a minute to stand up for the wild horses and sign the petition below.

The wild mustangs/horses were here way before we came and there apart of history they helped by pulling the wagons to discover new land and build the land that you live on. They were apart of the wars, Gen. Sam Houston, Robert E. Lee,and a lot of the presidents Ronald Reagan, George Washington, Lyndon B. Johnson, and many more. So with that they deserve and have the right to stay were there at.
They help with educational purposes for the younger generation.

I think taking over 800 wild horses (and do what with them I may ask?) is a bit excessive. Keeping a population controlled is always a good idea as the herd numbers are getting large and they will start competing for food, but do it humanly like the ponies from Assateague Island. Round as many as you can up, cut out the younger ones that can be sold and gentled and send the healthy adults back out for next time. And the ranchers should be appreciative of the free grazing... Don't they have to pay to us regional land?

Anywho, I don't want to see any horses hurt, but letting the herd sizes grow out of control is just as inhuman. I would like to see a regular friendly system in place then wait until its out of control and cut out and possibly hurt/kill over 800 innocent horses just for lack of good planning.

I do not understand how rounding up and killing these beautiful wild and free animals is producing land management....there is definitly enough room for everyone and animals a like. Sad sad sad :(

  25. donna says:

Please just be nice - really must you kill in order to feel powerful? - well I got news for you that is not power.

  26. Anonymous says:

They use to do this in New Zealand but our government started to bring the horses in and re-home them now they have a tighter control over the free ones. Killing these poor animals is not the right thing to be doing and i find this disgusting. Control the herds as we do why cant they come up with better solution than kulling

  27. This is probably the most hideous thing I've ever seen. It's not enough that we raped and pillaged our lands to the brink of destruction... now this? So very disturbing. You can bet your bottom dollar that I will champion this cause with as much energy as I can muster.

  28. Anonymous says:

Why?? Why the need for killing? This is sickening--SAVE THE HORSES!!!!

  29. Anonymous says:

It is sad that the government is once again blaming the wild horses for over grazing, when in fact it is caused from cattle and the sheep in the area. Ranchers have now gotten to the point that all they see is money... they rather spend as little as they can to make huge profits. So in return another herd of wild horses will be either killed or auctioned off all in the name of greed.

  30. Lady Veteran says:

Allow the horses to stay--get rid of the welfare program for the wealthy ranchers.

  31. Please stop killing horses as if they are meaningless.

  32. They say United States of America is the land of the free...Is it really or is it for those who can afford it once again money the root of all evil raises its ugly head and claims the innocent this time the wild horses..when the solution is move the cattle and sheep. And their solution kill the innocent the ones that the land was set aside for, our government falls on its face makes laws that they themselves break with no consequences. We the people must unite and make a stand for those without voices we could be next...THO SHALL NOT KILL !!!

  33. Phyllis says:

I can see thinning the herd if their are too many for t5he grasslands but I do not believe in wanton killing of any animals. Too bad the government doesn't know how to be a good stewerd of the land. They destroy natural predators and then wonder why the deer and horse population is too big.

  34. Fox says:

BLM doesn't want to use up our hard earned tax money to feed the wild horses, they'd rather have it around to waste, or sent to some American hating country to "help" them out

  35. Anonymous says:

Public lands belong to America and the American public--Wild Horses belong to America and the American public.
Ranchers belong on their ranch--the cattle of ranchers belong on the ranch.
Ranchers, keep your cattle off our public lands--we'll keep the wild horses off your ranch (not that they'd want to go there anyway).
BLM, you are a small fractions of the American government--your preferences do not matter. The American taxpayer pays your wages, and expects you to do your job--this does not mean "slaughter horses" for some manufactured "reason" (population control), while your sycophantic selves are accepting kick-backs from the Cattle Association.
If necessary, put it to a tax-payer vote--but remember, the horses are a part of the fabric of the American West--government workers (and cattle-men, for that matter) are just scat in a suit.
    Thank you.

All cattle and sheep should be removed from our public land.
If that is not possible then a very high fee for each cow there should be collected and used to lower our debt. WHY should these people be allowed to use this land at all?

  44. Beryl says:

Yes leave these beautiful animals alone to roam free. They were here long before us.

  45. Loretta says:

Horses are beautiful, they only eat grass. They are harmless to humans and animals alike. why do they need to be destroyed. I want my greatgrandchildren to grow up in a world where they can see wild horses.
I am at a loss as to why this needs to happen, let the beautiful horses go, Kill the alligators they are the ones that kill people and dogs and horses, also kill the snakes that do not belong here I would be afraid to live in some states because of them but i would never be scared of wild horses.

The lengths our government will go to pacify greedy ranchers is horrendous! These horses are our heritage. They need our help before they are totally wiped out! We all know that the government cares only about money, no matter what they have to do. There is plenty of land. The ranchers can feed their cattle and sheep, it's part of owning them!
