Native American Tribe In Michigan Enacts Marriage Equality

HARBOR SPRINGS, Mich. — A northern Michigan Indian tribal council has voted to recognize gay marriage.

The Petoskey News-Review reports that the legislative body of the Little Traverse Bay Bands of Odawa Indians made the decision Sunday. The tribe is based in Harbor Springs.

The 5-4 vote in favor of recognizing same-sex marriage sends the statue to the tribal chairman, who can either sign or veto it. The tribal council would need seven votes to override a veto.

At least two other U.S. Indian tribes recognize gay marriage. The Coquille Tribe in North Bend, Ore., began recognizing the unions in 2009, and the Suquamish Tribe in Suquamish, Wash., did so in 2011.

Voters approved a ban on gay marriage in the Michigan Constitution in 2004, but Indian tribes are self-governing.

People must learn to know that some people were born gay! It was not their choice.

That's what they want you too believe but it's the hormones that they put in everything so do your research before you say something so stupid

Unfortunately you are the stupid one.

Whether it's a choice, a "feature" from birth or a hormonal influence, that has nothing to do with the issue.

The issue is that of discrimination, that people face negative judgements simply for their sexuality, their fashion choices (piercings, tattoos, clothing), their gender, the color of their skin or their religion. Discrimination is not wrong only when the victim has no say, discrimination is wrong because you penalize people for things that don't hurt anyone and don't affect a single being aside from the victim.

Coming from a "GAY MAN" being day is not a choice. The US government did the research and said it themselves. We all have what they call, the "GAY GENE" in us. For years they tried to find a cure for it. Do YOUR research before YOU say something stupid! For most people though, the "GAY GENE" is stronger than in others. So to say that it's in the hormones or whatever is stupid. It's not a choice... you are born the way you are. Saying it's a choice is like saying you chose to be straight or whatever. I hate when people say that I chose to be gay or ask me why didn't I choose to be straight? I was born gay. I tried for years to change it with no luck. No matter what I tried, the fact still remained that I'm gay and I'm proud to be. Another thing, I'm native and know a lot about my people. They weren't against homosexuality. The white pilgrims coming across the water with their religion instilled that homosexuals are evil and the "devils work". Native Americans weren't against it till the time of the brainwashing of the white settlers. They changed and controlled a lot of things and still do to this day.

Really get a grip I know natives as well homosexuality is a gene wows again you believe everything they sell you like the land they put you on to keep you in a playpen.the creators are who? everything is a guess and a definition, that we could change at any whim.and yes evil has existed since we did,or is it a whatever you feel like today.when is it enough let's have child preteters gene aswell how bout rapest how bout every fealing gene and don't discriminate let's make it a right to be who you are no matter your creeds.lawless is a better world your right.

The biological determinism model (gay gene, etc) that has been promulgated by western science is out of keeping with human culture and history. Heterosexuality is a fairly recent innovation. We natives have been here for 10,000 years, and part of the process of decolonization involves reclamation and revitalization of our ancient social structures and spiritual practices, even at the level of sovereign governance and policy- which is our inherent right- our human right under the UN Declaration of the Rights of Indigenous People; and a measure to restore equilibrium to a world badly out of balance for the benefit of future generations. And some of y'all should remember to use your spell check once in a while.
