Bystanders Cheer as Blind Dog is Rescued from Lake Ontario (Photos)

Last Wednesday an 11-year-old Samoyed fell into the brisk waters of Lake Ontario as she stepped off the side of a ferry dock. Inge, the senior Samoyed is also blind and in the deep water she was helpless as she could not see where to go.

The mishap took place when she and her owner, Jim Argo, were waiting for a ferry at Wolfe Island, in Ontario, Canada. He had allowed Inge to exit his vehicle only so she could relieve herself, but on her way back she took a misstep and tumbled into the water.

Passersby tried to help and pull her from the lake with a rescue pole, but the effort was fruitless. Her owner, Jim Argo had rushed over and was almost into the water when the Kingston Fire and Rescue crew arrived to pull the dog to safety. It was just in time too because she had begun swimming away from shore and help.

Firefighter Claude Duval immediately went in after her. Duval wore a cold water rescue suit and lowered himself into the lake while his team members prepared the stretcher and other rescue equipment. Their first attempt at retrieving Inge was unsuccessful and she fell back in.

But on the second attempt Duval was able to rescue the terrified dog and she was hoisted from the water. As she was raised to safety, the concerned onlookers began to cheer. Jim Argo was waiting with a warm towel and open arms. The rescue team then kindly escorted him and Inge to the vet to make sure she was ok. It was a very happy ending.
