Fight Against the Extermination of the Amazon Pink River Dolphin

The Pink Amazon River dolphin is an amazing animal. It can be found in the Amazon River system as well as the Orinoco River system. These river systems flow throughout South America, specifically in the countries of Brazil, Bolivia, Ecuador, Venezuela, Colombia, Guyana and Peru.

They come in all shades of pink, from a dull gray-pink, to rosy colored pink, to a bright pink like that of the flamingo. This color variation is due to the clarity of the water in which the dolphin lives; the darker the water, the pinker the dolphin will be.

Although they have no natural predators, in recent times they are becoming endangered due to poaching. They are being killed and exported to other countries due to a belief that they have 'magical powers'. It is believed that eating their flesh leads to an increased sexual performance. This has been allowed to go on due to a complete lack of any serious policy for protection of them in Brazil.

Although poaching is the main reason for their decline, there are other factors involved too. Some humans see them as competition and kill them so they will not have to share the river’s fish. The dolphins can often become tangled in the nets of fishermen and die. Additionally, the building of hydroelectric dams in South American rivers, pollution, the loss of habitat and decrease in food sources, all threaten this unique species of dolphin. Currently their numbers are unknown.

It would be a complete tragedy to have this unique dolphin species disappear due to man's ignorance and treacherous ways. Please take a moment to sign and share the petition below to stop this.

Some facts about the Pink Amazon River Dolphin:

The pink amazon river dolphin is one of several colors that are common amongst the amazon river dolphins.

Other colors include white, yellow, grey, brown and black.

These dolphins can grow to be over 8 ft in length (not common) and weigh in excess of 450 pounds. They can live up to 16 - 17 years of age.

They live in shallow fresh water rivers and survive on a diet consisting of fish, crustaceans, shrimp and crabs.

All species of dolphin make up one of three groups within the cetacean species. The other two are whales and porpoises.

These pink dolphins inhabit South America and are found swimming throughout the Amazon and Orinoco rivers.

During the rain season when the forest floods with water these dolphins can be seen covering thousands of square miles swimming past, under, and through trees and other debris commonly found spread throughout the rainforest.

Their long snout allows them to borrow into narrow places such as hollowed logs and holes so that they can capture their prey.

This season is also a time when many dolphins begin to mate.

During mating season male dolphins can become very aggressive towards one another and cause serious injuries when competing for females.

It is believed that the pink amazon river dolphin is considered the most attractive dolphin of them all and is attacked far more often as a result by competing male dolphins.

Males are also known to carry objects in their mouths which are considered gifts or luxuries which they use to try to attract a female.

When the rain season ends and the water resides the river dolphins are forced to travel back to their shallow rivers until the next rain season begins.

Due to the facts that these dolphins live in shallow rivers they are able to avoid having any predators.

In fact humans are considered the only real threat to this species.

Is there anything that people will not bother on this Planet? These animals have lived in these waters for centuries. They protect us from sharks, their harmless animals. So, we shouldn't have to sign petition to protect these animals they should be protected automatically. Its a shame that we have to keep signing petitions to save the animals, to save the planet. Some men has gotten so arrogant, there is nothing they won't do for money. In short, save the Dolphins Man!!! Leave them alone. Those waters are their home, don't pollute the water, don't harm the Dolphins.
