Last winter on a cold day in January, a UPS driver named Gavin Crowsley was on his route when he saw a Great Dane lying out in the open on a short chain.

At first he had thought that the dog was a Dalmation because he was so emaciated. The dog had no food, water or even shelter from the harsh winter elements. Although Gavin was in the middle of his route he knew that he had to stop and help this poor dog.

Gavin later described that day like this, “I could see every bone in his body. He was just lying there. I knew if that dog didn’t die from starvation, he was going to die from the weather. I didn’t want to have a confrontation, but I couldn’t just leave him there.”

Gavin stopped and called the Humane Society, who responded immediately at the scene. Seven months later, the Great Dane who is called Phoenix doesn’t even look like the same dog. He went from an emaciated 70lbs to 160lbs. Although the vets discovered he was blind in one eye, totally deaf and had lost some of his ear due to frostbite, he is now a happy dog in a loving home.

When Phoenix was reunited with Gavin the UPS driver that saved him, he was a completely different dog. It only took Gavin a quick moment that day to make the decision to stop and help Phoenix and what a wonderful difference it has made.

I hope the owner that had him chained spent time in Jail and got a hefty fine, and was banned by the courts from ever owning another animal. He deserves more that this action from the courts, but I think that is all the law allows unless the previous owner served jail time. If they would do this to an animal, they would do this to a child. Think about that.

Gavin is a true hero. As a former dane owner, it made me mad as heck to see such a loyal and loving dog treated that way. I wish we could follow that old saying "do unto others as they do unto you", then I would chain up his former owner and treat him the way he treated Phoenix. I hope charges were filed against the former owner. Im glad he was save by Gavin and I hope phoenix found a loving home.

Growing up in a Dane kennel, I would just like to thank this man for his act of kindness. My Daddy would have whipped the man who let him starve like that.
