Sometimes heroes come in all sizes and ages. Such was the case in Brazil recently when a dog had been hit by a car in the city of Itajaí. The injured dog remained in the road after the driver who struck it drove off.

That was when 11-year-old Jean Fernandes, a brave boy who was passing by at the time saw the incident and made the decision to help the dog and bring it to safety. Jean then ran between the oncoming vehicles to pick up the helpless and hurt dog.

Luckily he was able to get the dog out of the middle of the street without any incidents or injury to himself or the dog. According to Jean's mother, Rubia Liliana Rose, this was not unusual behavior. She stated that her son loves animals and will rescue ones he finds abandoned or abused.

Amazingly, the whole incident was captured by photographer Rafaela Martins. His photos drew praise from netizens after Brazil's News Agency of Animal Rights posted the story to its Facebook page on Monday.

As for the injured dog, she has since been named Honey, or Mel in Portuguese. She is still in the care of vets at a local animal control center but is doing just fine, all thanks to a brave young man named Jean.

Wonderful story of at least one person having a heart and care for animals. Completely heartless of the people driving the vehicles to just keep driving by.

My son did that 12 years ago when was 12 years old. He sat down in the middle of the street until the 8 week old puppy came to him. She had a broken skull. We still have her and she is the wonderful. She surprised the vet because her head went back to normal. Her right ear still does not stand up but she has had a wonderful life. She can't hear well now but she still can love us and we love her.

  27. Thanks God it was ok, both the boy and the dog are safe, the dog was too scared to get out of the lane and the boy was quick to save her . It happened the same to my little dog once we were going to the bus stop with our neighbors that visited us it was night already the lamppost had that orange light our dog followed us but we didn't noticed we were talking then all of a sudden he ran into the street was hit by a car and everybody was in shock even the dog was in shock couldn't move my daughter 9 y.o. ran into the dog caught him and brought him safely to the side walk he was in shock with eyes opened we though he died but he was warm one eye was red too . He was alive and ok after we got home he slept quiet the next morning I took him to the vet and asked why he was in that position legs and arms rigid and laying on his back with eyes opened. Then the vet said dogs behave like that when in chock as if they are dead because they are too scared.
