The animal was believed to have been stuck down the manhole for around two days

A fox was rescued by a hands-on wildlife charity boss after falling 20 feet down a manhole at the St George's Hill estate in Weybridge.

Builders who were working nearby noticed the fox trapped down the hole and alerted the Leatherhead-based Wildlife Aid Foundation.

Chief executive Simon Cowell, 61, squeezed into the tight sewer himself and grabbed the fox.

“Someone had very unhelpfully left the manhole cover open and the fox fell at least 20 feet," Mr Cowell said.

"The fox was probably down there for around 48 hours and wouldn’t have survived much longer.

“So I pot holed down myself, grabbed the animal by the scruff and placed him in a carrier, and we then winched it out of the manhole.

“I then checked the fox over to make sure it didn’t have any serious injuries and that he was not too dehydrated. We then released it into the wild."

Mr Cowell said he and colleagues from Wildlife Aid then covered the manhole and left savouring a job well done.

He added: “It is the most satisfying sort of rescue when we can release them straight away and make an immediate impact.”

Wildlife Aid Foundation is a charity dedicated to the rescue, care and rehabilitation of sick, injured and orphaned wild animals.

The charity’s veterinary hospital in Leatherhead deals with more than 20,000 wildlife emergencies every year.
