Wildlife volunteers came to the rescue of a deer in Hailsham after it got its antlers entangled in a child's football goal.

Rescuers from East Sussex Wildlife Rescue and Ambulance Service were called to Abbotts Wood on Wednesday after receiving reports the animal was in distress.

They located and caught the deer before using scissors to remove the netting.

After five minutes the deer was freed and released back into the wild.

Trevor Weeks, a volunteer with the rescue group, said the operation had to be done quickly or it could have proved fatal to the animal.

"You have a 30 minute window in which to cut these deer free or they risk having a heart attack", he said.
